Im a newby here so here goes....

I really need some assistance from the folks that have lived in the Dr for a while

Im moving to the DR with my work
I suffer from migraines

I would like to make contact with people that BUY their migraine 'TRIPTAN' medications in the DR.

In particular i'm interested in which pharmacy you buy yours at ( name and address is needed) Either in Santo Domingo or North coast (pop/sosua)

my problem is this i currently use ZOMIG (zolmitriptan) and the production company says they do not sell it in the DR ( this is a big big problem for me).

Although it is sold in haiti ( does anyone go to buy medication in haiti, love to hear your problems and how to do this etc)

If anyone on your board uses the following triptan medications , and buys it in the DR please PM me with the chemist/pharmacy address.... i hope someone can help... my head will thank you

sumatriptan (Imitrex?, Imigran?) tablets
naratriptan (Amerge?, Naramig?) tablets GlaxoSmithKline
almotriptan (Axert?) tablets Almirall
frovatriptan (Frova?) tablets Endo Pharmaceuticals
eletriptan (Relpax?) tablets Pfizer Inc

I am not able to help you on locating a pharmacy, however, I might have a suggestion.

I receive a couple of prescriptions via mail from the States. I use a local mail courier. It costs a little bit of money, but because my prescriptions are covered under my US insurance, it ends up being more economical for me. I am able to manage everything online.

If you can find a reputable mail pharmacy, perhaps you can get your doctor to write a prescription and have the medications delivered via mail.

I use CVS as the mail pharmacy and CPS for the local courier, but I'm sure there are many options available.

Note: none of my meds are narcotic or controlled. I have heard varying opinions on being able to ship the strong stuff. Perhaps other posters can tell you of their experiences, or you can check with the shipping companies themselves.

Another option that I considered before moving was to rent a post office box in Miami and fly back every three months. My employer was willing to pay for this. It turned out that I don't need that, but it was nice to have the option.

ok, there we go.
relert from pfizer is available but it is very expensive.
two local labs (acromax and feltrex) do triptan pills. i have not tried them yet but i am ordering to see how they work.
i suffer from bad migraines and DR has made it worse. i am not sure whether this is about heat, air preassure or whatever but i suffer like hell.
i discovered triptand very recently and they are well worth the price.

in POP your best shot is farmacia central and popular (city center).

relert is about 700 pesos for a packet of two pills. you have to take two, really, for a strong pain.

when i have a migraine i lie on the bathroom floor and vomit. i am too weak to walk myself and miesposo has to carry me to my bed. i cannot open my eyes because the light bothers me too much. luckily the pain is sometimes so strong it literally blinds me - i cannot see. i cry like a child. before relert i was known to take 10-12 pills, vomit most of them, take more. eventually i'd land in the emergency room, get a painkiller shot and a suero. 700 pesos to feel better is nothing, trust me.

Migraine attacks can be very bad and restricting in your daily life.

I had it when I was a teenager, vomiting, not been able to sit, lay, stand, whatever, very light sensitive, my head was being hammered and I could not study anymore.

Went to a specialist, gave me the full battery of excluding tests like EEG, scans and a lot of Q&A and eventually gave me a specific mild anti-depressiva which I had to take for six months, which I did and then stopped.
I never had one migraine attack again.

I count myself lucky.

Migraine should be treated with herbal tea, cost 10 usd.

Then avoiding triggers for migraine, cigarettes, alcohol, aged cheese, caffeine, pressed meat (sodium nitrite added), chocolates, nuts, not having regular meals (eating late, or not having breakfast), white sugar, Monosodium glutamate (Ajinomoto, Vetsin, Accent and Tasting Powder, canned food, potato chips, Seasoning mixtures, barbecue sauce and salad dressings) ...

Mostly meat (as for added Monosodium glutamate and Sodium Nitrite) can be a main factor for Migraine (pulsating pain in one half of the head). And of course healthy food intake.

Noni juice in the morning, can help.

would the list be shorter if you wrote what you could eat? :bunny:

there are two antidepressants that help with migraines: amitriptyline and citalopram. the second one is available in DR as ZODEP, over the counter.

I was just joking about the price of the pills... I sometimes have a weird sense of humour, which gets the better of me...:bunny:

Nevertheless I used to have a girlfriend who suffered enormously from migraines, she was down and lying in her bed for 3 to 4 days a week, and no comedy playing. She was in pain.

On advice of a friend she started visiting an acupuncturist (a real one, not one of those shysters) and at first she had to go once a week, then once every two weeks, and after about 6 months, once every 6 months. From the third week she went she never suffered another migraine, and the last time I heard from her, which was about 10 years after she started the acupuncture, she never had another attack... maybe an idea to look into this?

I live in Canada and suffer from Migraines at least a couple times a week. Mostly from the frequent weather changes we get here. Interestingly, when I spent a month in DR in August I never got one single migraine. It was a nice relief.
