Very large waves the past few days, and continuing today, have removed a lot of sand from Sosua Beach. For 100 yards, mas o menos, from the Sosua Bay Hotel is covered with very large fllat rocks and what looks like the remnants of an old dock.

The good news is that Sosua native Rene Kircheimer happened to be there at same time as I was and he said this is very common. He said over the years the sand has been removed from this area but always has come back after the waves die down.

Must have been a lot of sand because I have seen people stick umbrella poles in the sand in this area. With all that rock, there would have had to have been a lot of sand to permit an umbrella to be there.

Lots of chairs piled up on high ground behind the rocks. It will be awhile before they are in use in that area.

It wasn't just this week as the beach has lost sand for more than a month now.

I haven't been to the beach in 2 weeks but then the sand was down 2 feet in height or about 4-5 feet in width before you step in the water.

This is altering the entry point to go swimming so you are stepping on soft sand instead of rocks before you get to swim.

These are the strongest waves on the North Coast we've seen in over 3 years. Saw surfers at the bay this afternoon. Whitecaps also hitting the coast on the beach by Waterfront and Sosua by the Sea. I'm trying to figure out what is causing them. I'm wondering if it has to do with the earthquake earlier this week or the moon even though it's been so overcast I haven't been able to see the moon for the past 2 nights. We've been used to seeing water slamming the rocks at POP but not so much in Sosua. Tried looking at the National Hurricane Center but aren't seeing anything. Strange. Curious to see what's going on in Cabarete. Waves have to be stronger.

These were choppy seas and not ideal for surfing coming into to bay of Sosua

I'm not the greatest surfer so I wait until the summer months and surf the south shore of Oahua.

Appreciate the info. So the winds are coming from the remains of Tomas. Today is calmer.

Yes, today sea is much calmer. Looking down at the beach from the gym in the casino building I could see some waves splashing against the Charamicos shore, but the water going to the beach was getting back to normal.

Two or three times

I have seen the sand leave and the beach looks like its finished with just a bunch of rocks exposed and very little sandy areas. Each time it somehow amazingly filled back in within a matter of a few days. I have no idea how its possible and if I had not seen it I would not have believed that all that sand could return with no waves to move it back. The first time I saw the beach completely rocky I thought it was over. Wife said just wait a few days. Sureenuf.

A local says this has been going on for years and years. Like you, I find it hard to believe that all that sand can come back when the sea is calm. I can easily see how sand is removed by the big waves, but not how it gets back in place when there are no waves.

We always see it come back but this year for the first time the waves were the highest we've seen. Today not a swimming day but things are definitely settling down.

Some pics of Sosua beach after the recent storm...
You can still see a lot of debris in the water waiting to be washed up!

None of these pictures show the most serious erosion. It is at the Sosua Bay Hotel end of the beach.
