Hello Gents and possibly ladies,
I have been going to the wonderful country of the DR for the past two years. Im an overseas contractor so i do most of my vacations in the DR 4 times a year... here's the deal Sosua is Sosua, and my opinion i take it for what it is, and i enjoy what it offers.... My thing is i would love to see the Colonal Zone and all its history. How is the nightlife Discotechs in Santo Domingo and Boca Chica? There is no shame in Pay 4 Play here and Im always open to meeting "normal" people. My Spanish is very limited, but that is the least of my concerns. Can anyone give me their opinion on this? Also is there anyone that will be visiting the D around the time of Nov. 30 - Dec 6. I am also interested in finding an informal guide to travel/party with......

basically any info on the life, time and people of the south coast.... esp. the monuments and women!

thanks in advance forum'rs.

You can see the zona colonial in a morning, you don't need a vacation for this. Boca chica lives up to it's reputation, a dump with over priced food, drinks, the beach is filthy with a horrible view. I have never made friends with a woman from boca before but I suspect they fit in with the surroundings quite nicely.
I hear they are making improvements in sosua at the moment so could be interesting.
The country is a lot bigger than the mongering venues, why limit yourself to one or tother?

I would just stay in Santo Domingo and do day trips to Juan Dolio. Santo Domingo has tons of nightlife.. Go to Av. Venezuela at night, during the day there is tons of stuff to do. Go to the colonial zone, walk along el malecon, go to el conde... list goes on and on.

Please complete the list of loads of things, for us who live here, I've been stumped on the attraction of the capital for a long time. If you could share the things to do during the day then this might quash my curiosity. Zona Colonial is okay for a few hours, walk along the malecon? Noisey headache, plastic ridden coastline, not everyones cup of tea I'm afraid. Zoo, gardens, zona colonial, that's one maybe two days covered. Most people I've met visiting the capital are either on business or sleep all day.

LOL! It's funny you say that because I live in Miami and I wonder what tourists do all day here! Personally I like the capital. I go for 4-5 days and I never run out of things to do. I have to wake up at sevel every day for work so of course I sleep in when I'm on vacation until around noon. I'll usually walk to el conde and have lunch at one of the cafe's there. I'll then walk to the area that is guarded directly across from el conde close to the fire station and check out the murals. Besides, I enjoy the overall hectic feel of the capital, meeting itneresting people and checking out the colmado's and bodegas...

Not to mention all of the cathedrals and museums there are to visit... evening time ill have dinner at adrian tropical or some other cool restuarant, night time go to the many casinos then hit at various bars, then crash at the hotel around 5am (not always alone hehe.) Next day do it all over again or take a half day trip to Boca Chica or Juan Dolio. Lots to do... I'm surprised you've never posed that question to people that go to Punta Cana for the all inclusive's and spend a week or two lonuging by the pool and eating super processed food all day...

I think people go to punta cana specifically for that. Any other country and I am never interested in A/I. Here? Once you've been here once or twice I can see the attraction, I don't think there is that much of interest here, beautiful and interesting people once away from tourist and hustling areas, but if like me are not interested in museums, religious clap trap, Bachata or gambling it can be a struggle to entertain yourself.

I think everyone gets stuck in a routine no matter where they live. I have friends in NYC that just go to work and go home.... The MOMA? Central park, Broadway, fine dining, who cares? I haven't been to South Beach in over a year. People that live in Vegas probably don't even gamble. What do you mean people go to Punta Cana specifically for that? I bet that more than half of those tourists don't even leave the resort. Reminds me of prison. If you are not interested in the museums etc, what do you do when you go on vacation? In reference to Santo Domingo, I would try to get out the routine if I were you. You might find that there's lots of fun to be had!

Vacation I go skiing in winter, and walking, camping in summer. Oh, no doubt you can have fun when on a vacation budget, day to day routine is something we all have if we have a stable lifestyle, to some extent anyway.
Retiring here is insane in my mind. For a job and environment to raise my daughter? Could be a lot worse.

Simple, do your first 4-nights in the capital (Colonial Zone) then spend Saturday and Sunday in Boca Chica.

Cheers!
