How do the Dominican people feel when they see foreigners working in their country? My friend moved to Hawaii, he said the people weren't very happy about him working there.

So? Are you going to take away a job from a Dominican? I do not think so.

If your skill set is special and you have been hired, I do not think that you will face problems..

In Hawaii there is an "Us" and "Them" mentality: Islanders vs haolis (I think that's the term)....

Here you are faced with language challenges and wages...

Good luck

How do they feel? Depends on what they see the foreigner doing and if they think they can do it with the same level of competence and expertise. I would think that if they see you here working and you are above the English instructor occupation they would assume you are rich.

I would think if a dude was an electrician trained in USA/Canada or Western Europe he could do pretty well. Clearly, the Dominican can do the same job cheaper but can he do a job as professional? I know people in this country in the 21st Century who are scared of electricity because of those slight shocks they get when operating appliances. From the work that I see in many people houses, I think the Dominican would not do the extra work to make the job look like top-notch. In the commercial buildings I think it must be better quality work.

I find myself questioning your expertise in the field of construction. I have worked construction in the States (Hartford Connecticut) and now here as well. The difference detween a house built in the states and one here goes way beyond the obvious one (US) constructed in timber and sheetrock, and the other in rebar and cinderblock.

I dare say that an upper middle class home here in DR is better equiped (electronically) than any I?ve cunstructed in the states.

I am personally of the view that the Dominican Republic is waaaaaay to liberal with regards to foreigners in general. Nationalization of employment although in the books, is not enforced. Too many Dominican's do not realize how many foreigners are "stealing" their jobs. A more stringent process is required to bring in skilled individuals, to weed out those individuals who overstay their time alloted. Too weed out individuals with criminal backgrounds before they arrive to the island. Too many foreigners can just come like those Hungarians did and carry out their shenanigans. Too many foreigners are just non grata and should be treated that way. However this government and ever since the PRD of SJB when I have active memories of it. Foreigners have been recieved with open arms and allowed to basically do as they please.

I disagree 100% with you, infact apart from your statement of foreigners being able to come and do as they please I'd say you dreamed the rest up last night. Sure for the most foreigners can come and fo as they like within reason, it is a free country, stay below the radar and you can get away with much.
Foreigners tend to create jobs, not take jobs away. How often do you find foreigners working for a native? Not very often. Foreigners work fir other foreign companies, and usually in jobs your average Dom couldn't do satisfactorily.
To get back to the question. I don't think they are that bothered, those that count spent much time back and forward to the US and so I don't see the problem. Those that bitch and winge are usually too stupid to get a job in a colmado and so their objection isn't really warrantable, no one is stealing jobs in colmados.
They get jelous of plenty other things about us foreigners but those are the things they think we all have by watching rap videos and a lot of silly tv.

No Anastacio,
I disagree with You here My Friend and Agree with the prior Post of Lando.
tell me any other Country, Your are European as I am, where Foreigners can walk in as they can and do here in the Dr, take any mid/low level Job such as beeing a Tourrep, Electrician, Painter etc etc etc without any Papers to be allowed to do so and not get Bothered?
in Europe the 'Jobless' Competitors would tear that Foreigner apart on His way to work.

the DR is extremely Liberate in case of Forcing the existing Laws against illegally staying and even working Foreigners.

I am not talking about High Skilled Specialists on specific Fields which are rare worldwide for specific Jobs to be done, we are talking mid/low level Jobs done by Foreigners who may not even really have gathered big Experience on that Job at Home due unemployment etc, those Jobs of course easily could be done by Locals in this Country, and as I saw so many "selfcalled professionals" from Foreign Countries here in my 16 years in PC, for anything to be done at My Place I fully prefer Local Nationalities, and Not for a difference of their asked Payments.

When it comes to foreigners working the trades, I'm surprized I've never seen any Filipinos working in the DR. They could make as much as the do working in Dubai or some of the other countries they go to now. They are, in my experience, some of the hardest working, fastest and skilled tradesmen I've ever met. I'm sure most can get by in Spanish as well.

It's true you don't see many foreigners working in Dominican companies with the exceptions of Internation Schools and call centers. Some corporations hire foreigners to be managers in their Dominican storefronts. But someone just mentioned that they know of a German working as a butcher in a supermarket as well.

I've also heard that it's harder for non-islanders to get jobs in Hawaii. Language can be one issue.

right Peter, Language is all around a issue for those Countries, on hawaii the same as here or in Thailand.
agreement on the Fillipinos, they are a real Workforce and very reliable, not present here on the Island maybe due missing easy flight connections, so til now no Filippino Community grew up here on the Isle.
and for the Hard Labour Work construction Jobs the Island has anyways cheap Labourers available, by the hundredthousands, so their may not be the big market to grow up a Fillipino Community here on the Isle.

Top Manager Positions etc, such are worldwide occupied always by the Best, always independend of nationality, I don't think we are talking High Level jobs here, because at that Level the Occupants anyways have their legal Papers ready for what they do.
yes, I know a Austrian Butcher(employed, not business owner) over here, Cabby Drivers(Drivers, not the Van Owners) from Europe etc etc etc.
I know some of them very well, very few have their legal papers ready, a Residency/Cedula, some even have their Homecountry Passports Expired since a very long Time, they don't bother anybody and nobody bothers them, the DR is very Nice on such.
the same Illeagals doing the same kinda Jobs somewhere in Western Europe would be chasen down, here on the island the Country is real open for everyone as long as not comitting Crimes, a Real Existing Land of the Free, not the BS Talk of other Countries.
