This is a follow up post from the thread below.
A little long, but I'm sure it would make a good SNL sketch :)

http://www.dr1.com/forums/living/109730-codetel-dumb-box-rocks.html?highlight=codetel

Codetel finally came and fixed the phone, but still no internet.
I have no idea what the actual phone line problem was, but it's safe to assume it wasn't in our office, despite them checking all the outlets, cabling etc.

Moving on...

Two guys turned up today to fix the internet issue.

They diagnosed the problem as a dead modem (Cisco 800). Their diagnosis, the internal configuration files have changed. Must have been those darn modem fairy's, again!

They said they couldn't fix the modem, we would need to take it to some "fulano" computer store and pay RD$1,500 to have it fixed.

Hang on...

The modem is owned by Codetel and about 12 months ago you took it away and fixed or replaced it. Shouldn't you guy's fix it or replace it again, it's your modem?

Ummm....

Sorry, we have no record of fixing our modem, it's out of guarantee, you will need to buy a new one or have the one we own fixed at your expense.

Can we have the one you have been testing the connection with?
Nope, you need to buy your own. How much is a new one? No idea.

How about we do this...

Let's cancel our current DSL connection that doesn't work and get a new one.
The new connection will come with a shiny new fairy proof modem that is under guarantee.

This sent one of the tech guys into a head spin, I'm sure he's still hyper ventilating :)

I will not bore you with the response, it was just sad.
Needless to say, math is not a strong point of some Codetel tech guys.

Can you now see why the thread is called "Stupidity on Steroids"?

It gets better...

Before we go, take our modem, give you our old dead modem and leave you with no internet connection, we need you to verify that we completed the work.

Ok, but...

Before you leave us in a worse postion than when you arrived, lets actually test and make sure the connection is good. When you have gone, I'll use an old Apple modem and router we have here and set it up.

So we proceded to test the speed...

We have a 2.0MB plan and got less than 900K however many times they tested it. This is despite the Codetel tech guy using speedtest.net and testing the line speed to a local server. Lame trick!

Houston we have a problem...

So now they proceed to try and find out why the line speed is 50% down.
They test the cabling, wall outlets, box in the building and finally give up.
Exactly what the other Codetel guy did a few days ago and found nothing wrong with the cabling in our office.

Diagnosis...

The buildings main wiring box is a mess and rats could have eaten into the line.

Hold on.. again...

The main wiring box is owned and maintained by Codetel.
If it's a mess, shouldn't you fix it? By the way, the building has NEVER had a rat issue.

That's not our dept, you need to call Codetel again and report a line problem and tell them about the wiring disaster we created and maintain.

Hold on... for the 3rd time!

You guys work for Codetel, why can't you report it.
We are the client, what do we know about crappy wiring, Codetel hating rats, modem fairy's, poor service, bull **** excuses that you guys appear to be certified experts at?

No can do... You need to report it.

Conclusion...

They agreed to loan us their modem until I fixed up the other one we have.
The speed is 50% of what we pay for.
Who knows if the line will ever be fixed.
We need to have the building fumigated for rats and modem fairy's.

And...

Codetel still SUCK!

It happens at least once per year to all of us and that's why you need backups for everything here.

Two steps forward and one step back and remember this.

The DR isn't perfect but it's good enough for now and Mary X Mas !

Ho Ho Ho....after midnight !

I love the thread title Stupidity on Steroids.

Can we start an annual award for best thread title or most creative title for codetel / Claro ??????

They are unbelievable!

Other than the initial issues with getting them to install my phone and internet service I can say that I've had good results with Codetel. Certianly, they always want you to go through their little protocol to make sure it's not on your end but I always happily oblige and at any rate I don't think this is too far off from what they do in the States. After it has finally been established that it is on their end they either have resolved it over the phone or sent a technician. In fact I've had about 25% more bandwith than what I should be getting since they "adjusted" my line a few years ago. My plan is 768/256 and i generally have 750-800/200-250

When Verizon bought Codetel my first reaction was: What r u thinking???? So a couple of % extra turnover, but hey they will damage your trademark? They will **** it up. Well finally they found out... STIlLL codetel is quality in comparison to the other ISP in Cabarete, Cable de Norte. Something beyond stupidity on steroids.

You can get up to 50MB, if you are willing to pay for it.

Look on the Codetel site for pricing, be prepared to be shocked!

Shouldn't that be: You can PAY for up to 50MB?

Paying for and what you get is not always the same thing in the DR.
