begin disarmament plan in 2011

And

http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/lo...ent-starts-early-2011-Domingo-prosecutor-says

It had been mentioned before that there were plans to disarm the population (i.e. only the criminals will have guns).

Here is the text from today's Dominican Today. Some of it is in Spanglish:

"Santo Domingo East.- Santo Domingo province prosecutor Perfecto Acosta revealed Sunday that the Justice Ministry proposed plan to disarm the population nationwide will start in early 2011.

He suggested an amendment to Law 36 on the Bearing and Possession of Weapons, to allow only possession to start the disarmament and to specify where the confiscated guns are to be disposed.

He said that these weapons should be subjected to smelting or some form of incineration, to prevent a recurrence to return to foreign hands, following the seizure, interviewed by journalist Federico Mendez on Santo Domingo TV,

Acosta said another alternative is to dump them at sea, as done in Puerto Rico, in places where they cannot be salvaged, but noted that he prefers melting them.

He said the use of illegal guns needs to be strongly tackled, because in his view it’s people which are being killed with them
"

Dr Guzman, do you have the details yet?

When the criminals and the police (often one in the same) are the only ones with guns, it will be a lot worse than having Daylight Savings Time.

Here is an example from poster on Dominican Today from Australia:

Australian Gun Law Update

Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts....

From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia

Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. (Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed ++++ upThere has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.
Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.

I thought he already does "Laws by Decree"?

Taking away Gun permits will cause a big drop in fees to the government.

Oh this stupid debate again...

You have certain people who hail from The US who justify owning guns and see it as a right (It is not in The DR). You have people from other parts of the world, including The DR who know that the less guns around the less amount of people who die...then you have the reality and that is that the cat's out of the bag.

People have been getting guns in The DR for many years now and almost everyone who can afford it has one nowadays and those people are not giving them up no matter what the government wants, because at this point they see it as a necessity to protect themselves from rising crime. So this is all more hyperbole...nothing will change.

Maybe they will confiscate a few, but keep in mind that you can get a gun for about 10k pesos (imported from Haiti by the same people who are supposed to maintain order). In addition you can easily make your own (Chilenas) as a lot of people do or just buy one from the local neighborhood tiguere.
