I am looking for information about scuba diving in DR. My friends are planning to stay at the Club Tropicale/Fun Tropicale. Has anyone stayed there? Good, bad, expensive? My friends and I (total of 5) are planning to go to the Dominican Republic from February 20-28, 1999. We are all certificed scuba divers and are planning to do a lot of scuba diving. I get the feeling that the diving in the Puerto Plata area is terrible. If we rented a car, could we drive to good diving from there? Or, would we be better off staying in another part of the island? I understand there was a hurricane recently. Which part of the island has the best diving now? Any good dive operators you could recommend? Thanks for all your help. Lin

Lin, did you see the page on this site about Scuba in the DR? http://dr1.com/travel/English/Scuba.html (or click link below) Las Terrenas sounds like a nice area for diving (and North Coast and Samana peninsula not affected much by hurricane, so it seems), but keep in mind it's a 4 hour drive from Puerto Plata (Samana airport is not officially open yet).

I'm wondering if these dive sites were equally good for snorkeling. We're looking to find good snorkel spots between Puerto Plata and Samana, but no one replied to my post :-(

We'll be in the DR the same week as you (first time) -- renting a car and driving from Sosua to Las Galeras (Samana area). The weekly rate is around $220 for cheapest car (avis).

Hope that helps a little. But hopefully someone who has actually done some diving in the DR recently will answer as well!
