Where can I get the best steak in Cabarete? Also, is there a resturant that serves good lobster or crab legs?

Sorry, to give you a somewhat negative answer to an innocent question. This is the Caribbean. I had good steak in Santo Domingo....may have been Porter House. But on the north coast? Sorrily, no.

You will get warm water lobster in local restaurants. The taste is stronger, not like cold water lobster. Crab available locally is also warm water crab. I doubt that is what you have in mind.

I imagine that in Santo Domingo you can get all of these foods imported.

However, you will be in the Caribbean. Why not try what is available locally and is really good. Local restaurants do a good job with mero and dorado. Casa de Papi's in Cabarete makes great shrimp and longostinas.

You can get a good churassco in several local restaurants. In Cabarete, I believe that is the closest you will get to a good steak.

However, perhaps some other dr1 members will give better information on this. My experience has been, if I want a good steak, I need to go home to the US.

Don't take this to mean there isn't good food here. You just need to have an open mind and try all the other foods and cuisines available locally.

In Cabarete, I would agree also, If by chance you go to Costambar then try the Gym Bar, Last I was there the steak (fillet) was excellent and very well priced, better than i have had anywhere else in DR, Almost as good as home and I am from Alberta Canada.

Los Locos D'En Frente is still good I guess. Down in Callejon. Prices jumped like 80 percent in 2-3 years which kind of sucks. Still cheap in comparison to Europe. Best steak I had lately was at news cafe in Sosua. Just excellent.

if you want to go for a drive into the mountains and enjoy a beautiful view and eat the best filet mignon in the DR then go to Cafeto in La Cumbre overlooking Moca and Santiago. I have taken a lot of people up there and they all say the same about the place. Don't order anything else up there

If you don?t mind taking a short drive from the North coast for a really good steak, then head out to Santiago. You will find many Steak houses here, but by far the best would have to be ?El Rancho Steak House? off of Av Republica de Argentina, near the Monument. Some may find it pricy, however, all their beefs are imported.

or Casa Del Pescador for lobster.

Casa del Pescador Review - Review of Casa del Pescador Restaurant in Cabarete | Frommer's

Steak I can't say. I don't risk getting much beef in the DR. I have been disappointed far too often. The Churasco at Ali's Surf Camp used to be pretty good.

I actually had a decent steak at casa del pescador. There used to be an argentinan steak place right on the water down the block from velero beach. I am not sure if they are still around.

You need to find a place with imported beef that doesn't cook it on "la plancha". Look for a place with a parilla. I tried the skirt steak at a place in cabarete called cinammon bozo or similar. Tasted like the steamed it rather than grilled it. . . .

I agree with El Rancho. I've had several fine steaks there.

Also there is a place a few blocks up from Plaza International called Puerto Madero (I think) where we've had some solid beef meals.

But the harsh reality is good beef...and I'm not referring to Prime beef, but Choice...has to be imported, is rather expensive and the quality can be inconsistent.

And I would take rafael's advice as gospel. The boy knows his beef.

Santiago DR
Grilled Duck breast is as good as it gets.....

I'd look for a place that grills Dominican duck breast. It more than rivals any beef cut as far I care. ]

Is there any place in Santiago that serves this up, duck breast is fantastic......

Go to La Papillon, just outside of Puerto Plata. The best steak I have had ever, anywhere. We make it a point to go there everytime we get back to Sosua. Got to give credit to Jim Belair for recommending it to us.

North Coast - Yes

I agree that Bliss is excellent but nobody mentioned a little out of the way restaurant that serves just as awesome a steak and lobster. I've seen the owner of Bliss there several times eating. Good luck eating it all, the plates are huge!

I you ever get to Rio san Juan try the french restaurant owned by Pierre, he has good steaks and good chips as well. It's on the main street at the right on a corner, I don't think it has a name, at least I never saw it.

steaks are like beer. everyone thinks that the one they like is the best. since making them is not rocket science, most guys with a half decent grill can make one just as good as any steakhouse. i have had Davy Crockett, the Argentine Steakhouse, Papillon, you name it. all excellent, i must say. hard to say which is best. i have had one done by my buddy in a backyard barbecue, that blows them all out of the water. to me , that is. just like beer, remember?
