It depends where you're going. If you were going to Encuentro, for example, they can charge you anywhere from 150 to 250 pesos. Negotiate.

I usually take a couple of hundred US one dollar bills with me when I go to the DR. That's what I pay the motoconcos with because it's hard to get small change sometimes in the Dominican.

For example, in Sosua, I always give the motoconchos $2 for a ride into town (maybe about a mile ride). I know I overpay them, usually, for the distance I'm going, but I feel they deserve it because they are always hustling to make a peso. I never ever get any complaints from the conchos that they didn't get paid enough....and I'd rather overpay them a little than underpay.

I look at it from this perspective: Where could you find someone to give you a ride in the US for two dollars....heck, most taxi in the US charge you $3 on the meter befor you even begin to move....

I'd say if you get a motoconcho within the town limits of Cabarete and get dropped off within town limits, I wouldn't pay more than 50 pesos....anything beyond that distance is negotiable.

And always negotiate the price BEFORE you leave with the motoconcho to your destination.

The town limits of Cabarete go about 1/2 mile east of Camino del Sol to a few blocks from where the Cabarete Medical Center is in Sosua. You see that Cabarete extends several miles east and west of the center of town. Also when a motoconcho goes into Camino del Sol or into Encuentro, it'll charge a lot more than $2.

I fully agree with you, always ask for the fare and negotiate before your ride.

This are the rates a Dominican / well known local pays for Motoconcho rides in Cabarete:

- within Cabarete center (approx. Ocean Dream / Callejon de la loma till Casino / police station)
= 25 Pesos daytime or 35 Pesos in the night, for very short rides 20 Pesos during the day is ok

- Cabarete center to La Cienega /Costa Azul
= 35 Pesos day

- Cabarete center to Camino del Sol
= 50 Pesos day / 100 Pesos night

- Cabarete center to Encuentro (down to the surf beach)
= 50 Pesos day

Tourists or residents not knowing this exact going rates are likely to be charged more.

So this is the reason why I get disgusted looks from motoconchos when, without a split second of hesitation or doubt, I hand them a 25 peso coin for the same journey (in Sosua) and walk away. This is what it costs, period. I don't ask what it costs beforehand. They aren't very happy about it but they never ask me for more. They just ride away.

25 pesos is about right inside of Cabarete. To Playa Encuentro from Cabarete, 50 pesos. (Do people really pay 150-250 pesos to sit on the back of a motorcycle??)

Yes! and more too. I'm Hispanic and in a few occasions have negotiated prices with them for trips to Encuentro for our hotel guests. I was never able to get it below 100. This is from the area around Janet's. I had once a couple of Scandinavian girls who were paying 500 for them to be dropped at Encuentro in the morning and picked up at lunch time.

Sorry dude, or dudesse, I imagine if I was a local or spent an extended vacation (more than a couple of months) I probably wouldn't be so generous with the pesos or I'd get my own transportation....:chinese:

the best advice is NEVER to negotiate or ask the price. learn what dominicans pay (ask someone you know) and then pay exactly the same.

Cabarete East to town center

Jumped on a moto concho last night from Cabarete East to center of town. When I got off, this guy wanted $100RD. That's $2.70 US. I told him that from now on I will walk.
