Can anyone up there recommend Centro Medico Cabarete and/or Dr Roberto Caballi. Would be good to hear from anyone with positive or negative experiences they can share.
Thanks

Are you certain of that name? Do you perhaps mean Dr Roberto Spitalli? If so, I have excellent news for you .......... he is a very good doctor highly recommended by a retired doctor who used to post on this forum.

I visited him recent;y & got VERY good service, a reasonable price for the surgery needed AND after-care service FAR superior to that of Centro Medico in Puerto Plata!

If you DO mean Dr Roberto Caballi ................... Sorry, never heard of him!!! :surprised :ermm: ~ Grahame.

Our family has had a lot of experience with CMC; everything's always been great!

I would readily agree that CMC is a good choice if needing hospital facilities. Not only are they able to offer good medical care but the owners and staff make sure that the 'personal touch' customer service is paramount when dealing with the patients and their families.

More than slightly out of date now but Dominican Republic Real Estate : New Sosua, Dominican Republic Medical Center tells of some of the available facilities soon after the opening of the hospital - they now offer far more.

Joke or commercial?

Not sure if this is a joke or commercial. I rather use google and a toolbox than put my foot in the North Coast clinics. Union de Medico in Santiago is the only alternative for us.

Have you had a bad experience at CMC or any other hospital on the North Coast with which we may not be familiar because, if so, am sure we would all like to hear what happened?

Also, I assume you were referring to Union Medica in Santiago or is there another hospital too?

Union Medica correct. Its easier to write about the good experiences because there are close to none. Then on the other hand you tend to hear the horros stories, not the stories when everything worked like it should. IMHO most clinics in this country is nothing about care, all about greed. I have good first hand experiences with Union Medica in Santiago.

A friend died this week under extremely weird circurmstances but I dont have all the details so I leave it like that.

As in many institutions, the quality of the service received and therefore facilitating expectations fulfilled, is down to individuals. It just happens that Union Medica is where we experienced greed of the highest calibre regarding one particular specialist who then mis-diagnosed rather than call on the expertise of a colleague.

I was there last week and the service was as good and a lot quicker then most Hosp. I have delt with in the US. It's not your typical DR Hosp.

You are absolutely correct. Its all about the persons and have friends that had first hand experiences. Unfortunately in emergency cases there is no time for this.

Human error can happen anywhere

You have to remember, its relative-if you are in need of immediate medical help and live in Sosua/Cabarete area, this place is the best choice.

What makes me nervous, for any medical facility here, is what kind of training they have once out of med school-most countries have continuing education, not sure what the requirements are here. Its not just where you studied, but if you kjnow of current treatments, etc.

But you have to realize, errors happen in medical clinics worldwide. I have had both good and not so good expeirences with CMC-luckily, nothing life threating in the end, but nevertheless, still glad they are here, better than having to go to Bornigal. And in comparison to other hospitals in the N Coast, they are clean, multi-lingual, and seem to have their insurance claims dept somewhat organized.

We really need a good clinic here on the North coast so I hope u are right. I agree that the facility looks great, but like Whirleybird said the persons are more important.

I cannot in any way fault the medical services I have used in the DR to date, from getting treated for a condition that was attempted many times at the American Hospital in Dubai to no effect, but 1 visit to the hospital / clinic at the entrance to the botanical gardens (can't remember the road name), diagnosis and medications issued and problem solved, to the excellent services at the fertillity clinic, (Dr Maximo Cunillera) medicalnet building, Piantini and the Centro gynocology behing the Hotel Jaguar, Malecon which resulted in 2 beautiful healthy baby girls (the Dr at the Miami clinic gave only a less than 20% chance of success). On my experience, give me the medical care in Santo Domingo as a preference any time.

I too had a laminectomy (spinal surgery) performed by Dr Spitale back in 2003 and I cannot recommend him highly enough, IF that is who the OP means?

I was in Sosua for the month of January, and heard a frightening tale of a 36 year old Norwegian who went to the new medical centre with a minor complaint and was given an injection into his spinal fluid, clotted in his brain, and he was dead in 2 or 3 days.... surprised this hasn't been reported yet

This was the friend I was talking about earlier in this thread. He had some pain in his back and went for an x-ray and then... Its not the first weird thing that happened in the clinics here on the North Coast, but usually its cases where the naive gringo walks into the clinic with a foreign health insurance. Its called bingo for the clinics. They earn more money the longer u stay entonces... Care, cure, Que?

This has nothing to do with Roberto Caballi and his surgery though. He might be an excellent doctor.

Best advice? Stay healthy

Let me start by apologizing if this post is in bad taste, or has already been covered on another thread, but I see it on-topic (related to quality of care).

This thread brought back thoughts of Lambada for me, and that she passed away suddenly from a condition that didn?t seem to be life-threatening to those living in a first world country (I won?t mention what it was, but didn?t sound like a life-threatening disease to me anyway).

Right after it happened, I remember Graham writing that he would post more when he knew what the facts were. I have not seen it. I only mention it because I felt Ginny was truly one of those people that would want information to be posted if it was factual, and could contribute to an important discussion.

Was this a case of poor medical care? If it was truly was an acute illness, and is not relevant to the discussion on the quality of medical care on the North Coast, please delete the post. I am not fishing for details that should be private.

Maybe I just wanted an excuse to mention Ginny again. I miss her.
