First of it's kind aquatic center in the DR

Apparently the first of it's kind aquatic center will be located in La Caleta near SD. It is hoped that as a result of this that many fisherman will convert to working in the tourisn sector which will save the local reefs from more damage and also create jobs and awareness of environmental responsibility.

It is great! I dived there more than 20 years ago when it opened up.

so this is a dive site, not a snorkeling spot, right?
pehaps they can start something like Buck Island Reef in St Croix/

Buck Island Reef National Monument (U.S. National Park Service)

you can snorkel through a path which is marked with various plaques identifying coral and fish and fauna...

and it is easy for swimmers with little experience to just put on mask and fins...

much more accesible to the public

I think eco tourism could be the next big thing to hit the DR if the gov't would take it seriously. Also, there has been talk of doing more to promote the history of the Tainos, who as we now know unequivocally, did not die off 30 years after the arrival of Colon.
