There have been activities all week long. School kids marching, flags displayed.
The day commemorates the day back in 1844 when the movement led by Juan Pablo Duarte, called Los Trinitarios (Dios Patria y Libertad), began their assault on the Haitians then governing this side of the island.
Like the 4th of July in the United States.
Today, the President will address the National Assembly, telling them, more or less, the State of the Republic, and announcing his plans for the year. Later on, decrees will come flying out of the Presidential Palace replacing some of his cabinet and moving others around. Military and Police officers are either anxiously awaiting today or are sweating bullets, depending on how they see their future. Promotions, retirements and coveted posts are all in the mix.
And, of course, Carnival is on, brother and sister, it is ON!! Santiago, La Vega, Bonao and other towns are out in the streets cavorting...
Enjoy the show.
