Is it worth it for me to convert US dollars to Pesos?

I'm only there for 5 days and I'm staying at an AI. I'm not sure what the shopping area is like around Boca Chica. Are US dollers accepted everywhere? Is it even worth converting if I'm just buying trinkets and maybe a meal or two.

You will lose a little on every transaction. Also, you may not have bills of the denomination you want in some situations. US Coins are not accepted anywhere.

You don't have to change large sums. You can change $50-$100 to start.

Just convert around $100 into pesos. Your hotel, food drinks etc will already be paid for. I usually go to DR for five days as well. Dollars are not only accepted but preferred.

Depending on where youre originating from. I travel from Canada and I get US $ here before going and then convert it to pesos little by little as I need it. If you're staying within the tourist area they take $US but pesos are preferred in the local areas. They never give you the proper exchange rate for $Canadian even when our $ was up higher or at par with the $US. You can usually get the best exchange rate at the western union type places or currency exchanges... the hotels and banks don't always give the best rates.

Pardon my ignorance, but what kind of denominations do pesos come in? Would it be smart to get small bills or coins?

Sounds like you won't need anything above a 500.00 denomination. Easier to get change.

Don't think you'll be needing coins.

Ha!...the 200.00 is not in the photo!

For an example, what would an average dinner cost in Boca Chica in pesos? This way I can get an idea of how it works.

Here's how it works:

Currency Converter | OANDA

You should bring $50's or $100's to change as needed (I wouldn't suggest more than $100 at a time) at your resort or use a debit card at an ATM to get Pesos as you need them. Changing Pesos back into U$D upon your return is a losing proposition.

Yes.....

I would definitely exchange what you think you might spend. Anything left over can be given to hotel employees for tips. Don't exchange at the airport or banks. Many places will accept dollars but you receive less than the currrent rate. I would avoid the $2000RD bills [the blue ones] as many places cannot make the change. I always try and have lots of 50, 100 and 200 pesos bills as many places especially small places do not have much change.
