I'm only there for 5 days and I'm staying at an AI. I'm not sure what the shopping area is like around Boca Chica. Are US dollers accepted everywhere? Is it even worth converting if I'm just buying trinkets and maybe a meal or two.

Is it worth it for me to convert US dollars to Pesos?
Depending on where youre originating from. I travel from Canada and I get US $ here before going and then convert it to pesos little by little as I need it. If you're staying within the tourist area they take $US but pesos are preferred in the local areas. They never give you the proper exchange rate for $Canadian even when our $ was up higher or at par with the $US. You can usually get the best exchange rate at the western union type places or currency exchanges... the hotels and banks don't always give the best rates.

You should bring $50's or $100's to change as needed (I wouldn't suggest more than $100 at a time) at your resort or use a debit card at an ATM to get Pesos as you need them. Changing Pesos back into U$D upon your return is a losing proposition.

Many places will accept dollars but you receive less than the currrent rate. I would avoid the $2000RD bills [the blue ones] as many places cannot make the change. I always try and have lots of 50, 100 and 200 pesos bills as many places especially small places do not have much change.
