fatter

There is no doubt. Dominicans are definitely fatter than years ago.

I credit that to greater fast food option - McDonalds etc.

It was rare to see a young woman 17- 30 with a belly. Now - a little belly is the rule rather than the exception. Nothing like the US but more than in the past.

The men are bigger too. I see some pretty young yguys walking around with giant guts.

lol from McDonalds? McDonalds is not everywhere in the dr and everyone can't afford it. They're fat from eating junk foods like chips, pop, candies, and pure laziness.

It seems obesity rates are climbing all over the world, although nowhere to the extend of North America and England.

McD's is for rich people in the bigger cities and Dominicans usually only drink on the weekends.

People complain but food is cheap here, and good to boot. Que viva la patria!

I have been coming since 1997 as well and have said the same thing about the change in figures. I think it's just that there is more prosperity and in turn make people eager to spend their money on extra stuff that they never had before....

Agreed. The DR is much more prosperous than 15 years ago. In fact, it's twice as affluent.

More $$$=More eats.

Anybody that thinks McD's is patronized by more than 5% of the population has really no clue. We have a half a million people in Santiago and at most the average person might eat at McD's once a year if at all.

That's the truth. You dont need McDonalds to overload your diet with fatty fried foods. All of that high fructose snack food and beverages coupled with lack of frequent physical activity gives you the butter ball belly. Whats the stat on coronary heart diseases?

I live in US and never eat junk, must be the reason I'm in good shape.
I cook my food every day except weekends we usually go different restaurants.
I'm 5 ft. 10" tall / 180 lbs. perfect measures as the doctors...

180lbs? Haha! I was 180lbs in 1992 or so, 1st year in school. Glory days man. That was when I had more belt loops than waist to hold the pants up. I had like a 31 waist and wore size 34 pants.

hey, don't blame american fast food for obesity in DR. have you seen how empanadas are made? pollo frito? or even plain rice? nah. dominicans just do not eat very healthy. poor or rich. poor even less os because they do not understand the concept of diet. every day i see clients with diabetes who but their daily pill and a bizcocho to go with it.
i do not know whether dominicans are fatter now than they were before but papers have put many stories about growing obesity and a high number of dominicans with diabetes, high cholesterol and hipertension.

Domincans maybe getting fatter but what boggles the mind is how obese my fellow countrymen are getting when I go back on average a couple of times a year. What I don't remember seeing growing up but see now are lots of obese kids.

A more sedentary lifestyle combined with diet and genetics? The basic diet hasn't changed that much but I'm sure people are eating more unhealthy processed food type snacks and killer sugary drinks than previous generations.

You hit the nail, that's exactly the problem.
I worked for about two years doing parking deck cashier, that was killing me 8 hours a day doing nothing. Worse is for those folks who run to McDonald on daily basis to get their food, most my ex-coworker over there are fact monsters ...
The girl who released me every day broke two heavy duty chair in one year as she is about 400 pounds.
