Santo Domingo

Mexican singer Lucero will be presented on July 4th at the TV studio that will start the transmission of HD (high definition) programs on channels 5 and 15 at Telemicro.

The formal opening of the HD studio will be done with a show in which also will be presented the merengue star Fernando Villalona and the show "Kings of humor," which starred Raymond Pozo Miguel Cespedes in various stages.

The HD studio installed by Telemicro is of the "progressive" type, which allows adaptation of 3D content and other high-tech future systems.

The technical data
Global Television is moving towards high definition. The HD capacity of Telemicro is 1080p which is installed in the studio built for channels 5 and 15, because it is the maximum allowed by the human eye to decode images. The high definition television or HDTV is one format which, in addition to digital (DTV) is characterized by broadcast television signals in digital quality superior to traditional analog color TV (NTSC, SECAM, PAL).

Digital TV by 2015

The president of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL) David Perez has told the Corripio Media Group that 2015 will mark the end of the analog era of TV and the start of digital TV. He said digitalization would bring improved quality television services. Companies will need to import new equipment for the change. Perez said that while some channels have been making investments towards this switch, none are fully digitalized yet.

Even the most resource-stripped home-based station in Elias Pi?a can become digital overnight by putting in a digital encoder which costs 300 dollars, brand new, out of China. That is "DIGITAL". Now if we are talking about HDTV, that is different thing. Being HDTV and being digital is not the same. You can have SD (standard definition) and be digital - e.g. digital cable non-HDTV channels, satellite is digital (Dish, Sky, Claro TV, etc.)

So will the media group release some of their frequencies (e.g. Telemicro ch 15 frequency, Corripio either 2, 11, 39 frequency etc. or will they just triple/quadruple their channel offering over the existing frequencies?

What exists in DR is a broadcasting mess. There should be "tower companies" which operate radio frequencies (DVB-T), towers and all the transmission equipment and channels buy their services in one of several "DVB-T multiplex" offerings. In Hungary, for example, there exists "digital cable over UHF" which transmits about 40 TV channels including HBO etc over regular UHF frequencies, so people with digital set-top-box or digital-enabled TV can get most popular cable channels over the air. Another competitive option besides cable, IPTV and satellite.
