Minou

Minou Tavarez is a Trujillista in body and soul. All of the things she claims as her ideals she violates every day of her life. She's an "arribista" who enjoys power at the top travelling and wasting taxpayers' money for self-adulation of her family. She is also one of the the greatest supporters of Leonel Fernandez, a man only a short step from being a dictator and who wants to perpetuate himself like Trujillo in power, thinking he is irreplaceable, unique, superior to all men and dictating over his own party as to who should run for office or not, firing those who try to run for president and inhabilitating those who hold no public office, but who challenge his aspirations. She was instrumental in naming her native province after her family and practicly controls the province. Her family is part of Leonel Fernandez' paternalistic empire with members placed in key jobs such as Minister of Environment, a job he has not been able to do well because of his permissive attitude towards land invaders of national parks and government lands, invasions mostly led by members of his own party, military henchmen and of his political base support. He has allowed the depredation of Montecristis' park lands, The Haitises, Parque Mirador Este and forest fires in the Sierra de Bahoruco continue for charcoal burning. Forest preserves such as Loma Quita Espuela are under siege by illegal lumberers, mostly government-official inspired. The bamboo plantation on carretera Duarte is one example of depredation and destruction by the lackaidistical effort of Fernandez Mirabal. Minou Mirabal has opposed the right of free speech by blocking efforts thru political hacks Angelita Trujillo's distribution of the recent book about the Trujillo Era. This is unbecoming of a self-appointed democratic and free speech advocate like her who supposedly fought Trujillo's control of the press. She and her family continue to oppose the return of members of the Trujillo family and their participation in politics, an inalienable right of the Trujillos being that they are as Dominican as their entire family and have not committed or being guilty of any crimes that would cease their citizens' rights. The Mirabals continue to impose their will and side of history on the Dominican people, specially on the youth and students of our nation by imposing revisions of history on educational books thru their powerful voice in government. If one were to judge by her government's record, the amount of women abused and assassinated in the last six years has shaken the foundation of women's rights. More complaints for abuse of women have been filed than ever before with the results being that the majority of cases are being ignored and government agencies have not done much on prevention and prosecution. Her government has a dismal record of appointing women to high office and those who participate are given meager jobs or the typical appointment in the department of education and women's affairs, both of which have minimal budgets and one is unnecessary, since there is no reason to have a department exclusively for women where there is equality. She has been elected to office under a system supported by her of selective voting which prevents fresh blood into the electoral system and helps maintain a "buddy system" for reelection purposes.

Do you really think there's equality for women in the DR? It may be better than the past, but true equality, no even close.

Bob: If the just published Dominican Census is to be believed(I take their word for it) Dominican Republic now has 9.3 million inhabitants. But unlike other countries, our female population is now less than males by 100,000. That is a troubling thought. What happened to all the women? One can only guess. But part of the answer could be that women immigrate more than men and have better financial opportunities abroad. Any other thesis?

Nope, many of those women that migrate are also working in degrading jobs - prostitution, strippers, ....etc. Also due to the drug trade there are a lot of men killing other men. The population of most countries has slightly more women than men. Men die younger.

You two seem to be speaking at cross purposes, unless I missed the bit where Golo says that women in the DR enjoy fully equal rights.

I would say the main factor here is female migration because as Bob says there are usually slightly more women than men in the population because men die younger and are more likely to die prematurely in wars, violence etc. Although there is a relatively high feminicide rate in the DR it is not enough to skew the male-female balance in the population.
