What is the best way to get to Higuey

I'm planning a trip to Higuey soon. What is the best way to get to the city of Higuey? I would prefer to fly as close as I can get before any land travel.

Fly into La Romana and its like a 1 hour ride depending on traffic if you fly into Santo Domingo its like a 2 hour ride its a straight run from the airport

I would like any info you can give me on Higuey. Where are you going to stay when you get there? What are you going to do when you get there? Do you have a contact person that I can use as a guide?
