Work of art?

Spray painted (apparently proudly) by KanaRapai CabaRete ArtStudio & 'Shak' on the beachfront wall at the public entrance near Ocean One. the 'trash' seen in the photo was the artist's materials and cleaned up by the artist.

i like the colours apart from the black bit on the icecream, maybe he should have painted the wall one colour first before starting- overall effect is not good

Unfortunately with this kind of thing, if one is tolerated it breeds all wannabe artists from all over town to start messing up clean Walls.
Good or bad art (and as far as modern street art goes he is terrible) it is not an acceptable covering for the streets of any town. It brings down the class of the place, repells anyone not open to that kind of thing, and in general lowers the tone of anywhere.
Keep it for the skateparks.

Allow one wall and all Walls will be covered within months.
I know cabaret caters mainly to young board sport types who might not mind it, but there are other people who live there and use Cabarete for other reasons.

If it is a private wall one off, then it is still very poor work and should get someone who can really shake a can in to touch it up, or just redo the whole thing.

I consider that graffitti, the bane of cities everywhere.

The city of Philadelphia dealt with graffitti in a unique way - there are about 3000 [yes, three-thousand] wall murals on buildings around the city, in slums and upscale locations, and some of them are remarkable. Take a look at these pages, the 4-story one of Frank Sinatra is great, Frank Rizzo is a former mayor. In the Latino neighborhoods there are Caribbean scenes 4&5 stories high. Now THAT'S art! It's wonderful to come around a corner and see one of them - the one in Cabarete doesn't have the same effect.:ermm:

I have a very simple, strict definition of art vs graffiti. (although some graffiti can - rarely - be artISTIC, it is not "art").

my definition is: if YOU own the wall, and you paint on it, (or the owner of the wall asks you to paint it), then it's "art" (if you care to call it that)

if someone ELSE owns the wall, and you paint on it, it is "graffiti"... and YOU are an A$$ hole.

And I'm a born and bred Philadelphian, (who happens to now live near Pittsburgh)
