Hey folks,

i need some travel information since i'll be heading to cofresi in a few weeks.
Since I am a heavy smoker :cheeky:, I need a steady supply of menthol cigs (marlboro lights menthol or newport are fine): Are there colmados within walking distance of be live carey? I found out about "Chris&Mady's" running a gift shop and restaurant there. Are they still in business?
Regarding transportation, i got a coach seat from the airport and return prebooked - however, if I'd like to go to Puerto Plata in order to buy something (i.e. cigarettes :D), I am certain taking a taxi from the resort entrance is the quickest, yet most expensive way (taxi cartels somehow do exist in every single country of the world). I guess I should walk to the nearest street and hail a taxi/carro publico/guagua (how to distinguish?) there. What should I expect to pay?
Third question: I saw a large supermarket on my last trip to POP while doing a puerto plata city tour. Forgot the name though. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any answer :)

Greetings from Austria

The Ocean World Liquore Store has cigarettes and liquors at very competetive prices, and is also open late. 11am to 1am. The new big supermarket on the Malecon is called Sirena.

Smokem if you gotem

I am so thankful I kicked the habit years ago. Smoking is really such a powerful addiction, and complicates so many health issues. It is a shame to see how cigarettes dominate people lives and how they plan activites around the ability to smoke. I remember cooking steaks on the grill outside back home. I would be like "well one more smoke and these babies will be ready."

liquore store is in the marina, anyone can come in. i've been there few times myslef.
waitresses are cute :)

gugua is a small van, fits about 25 people (occasionally more), carro publico is a normal car (fits 6 passengers). they both go towards city center, from the ain road. just cross the street and catch anything going to town. guaguas C and F cost 20 pesos for a ride, not sure about carro publico but usually they are few pesos more so say, 25.
none of them will go to la sirena but guagua C will take you to supermercado jose luis, it stops right in front. i mean, it stops anywhere you want, passes in front of the shop.

that sounds way easier than having to pay hotel prices for basic goods :) thanks a lot :)

maybe i am going to take a taxi to la sirena, as i understand this is a fairly new and big place - and i could take a walk on the malecon as well then. Taxi should be something like RD$ 300, right?

The taxis want US$50 to go the airport, so I doubt you can make it to Sirena (about half way) for RD$300.

They want RD$200 just to go from Ocean World to Be-Live Carey (Sun Village), and thats only 400 yards.

There are lot of facilities where you dont need a day pass for OW, for example Poseidon Restaurant, Bravissimo Show, Casino, and Lighthouse Lounge, Liquor Store, and Marina facilities.

There is a off resort gift shop next door to Be Live. A short easy walk. It is behind the Ahora restaurant on the beach. Cigarettes (marlboro)selling for $34US a carton 2 weeks ago. Cartons are only a few dollars cheaper at the supermarket in town - hardly worth the time & expense. Cigarettes are cheapest at he airport on departure - don't be fooled by the sign at the downstairs shop that says they are cheaper - there are 2 shops upstairs that are cheaper.
Lifestyle resort is next door to Be Live. You'll will probably be approached by one of their salesman - take the tour and listen to their pitch and ask for an invitation to their huge Sunday nite party on the nearby peninsula - good food & entertainment - worth it!

Thanks a lot for the gift shop info ;) I dont remember what I paid last year at a playa dorada colmado - i believe it was RD$ 110 a packet? I do remember, however, that all the cigs i saw at the airport were in fact more expensive than at the colmado. At least i thought so. I didnt get any cigs at the airport though last time, so that might be my mistake - i spent 20 minutes looking for the c lounge and another hour on presidente. Thanks to conchman for pointing out the taxi mafia pricing ;) I guess RD$ 300 would be an okay price for a less-gringoey person than me - i'd probably end up paying 15 dollars or RD$ 600.

They sell duty free cigs at the airports in germany (intl. sector from there) at around USD 45. Not exactly a bargain ;) I generally do take a carton in duty free in case I go somewhere where cigs are rather pricey; at the DR, that doesnt seem to be the case. One carton wont do, by the way. Staying there three weeks. :)
