But true... it's not only about health care, but education also.

I work with a 27 year old man, who is unhealthy to the point he had a heart attack (or stroke, not sure which) recently and had to have exploratory surgery. He has done nothing we can see to change his life style. In fact, him and his 18 year old GF are expect there second child they conceived 7 months after their first.

And this example is someone that was raised in the USA until his late teens.

This is especially true if you are out of the DR and your novia needs some spending money. Sick mother, or her brother is in jail because he had a traffic accident. Western Union is alive and well in the DR.

Clearly Josemexicano, it is a disturbing thing. Of course the only funny side is the amazing amount of sick mamas and Papas of Sankies but the truth is that there really are numerous Dominican elderly that are sick with high blood pressure and diabetes among other things.
The diet of many white starches and not enough greens and fruits contributes to high sugar but most of all it is the poverty which does not allow them to be continually medicated. Simple generic meds keep BP and Sugar under control easily but without money, well....
Great Grandma and two Great Aunts of my child have both diabetes and HBP and cant afford to follow the correct diet, they eat what they have and that's usually yuca and platanos. They don't take pills daily as needed and suffer for their inability to buy meds. It's a real problem for the poor.

A sick parent is a better excuse then the girls in Thailand use. "My family's water buffalo just died and we can't harvest any food and we are all going to starve to death!"

And they depend on foreniers to help them becuase they have no help

Sadly, in our case, they don't depend on foreigners. They just suffer day to day. Their children who work give them what they can but it's not enough to buy the pills, they just go without.
Yes all the Sankie stuff is funny and at times ridiculous but there are very real problems for people who haven't got a Spankyette.

From what I've seen of elderly Dominicans they are in better shape than their American counterparts. Say all you guys want about an unhealthy diet but Dominicans eat a lot better than most Americans or Europeans. What does them in are lack of medical care in some areas and cheap medicine and too much drinking.

Man, you are killing me bro. Wise up. Not everyone has a sick relative and not everyones relative is sick. It is a ploy usually to get you to part with your money. If you want to help sick people all over the world, do as I do. Write a check to Medicin San Frontier. They can do MORE with your money that any idiot who tells you they need you to send them money because their mom, dad, significant other is sick. Question? Did YOU make them sick? And can you personally cure what they have? Then all you can do is pray for them and hope they recover. But giving them money? Money aint never cured no illness. I thought drugs did that.

But I think you may be too young or inexperienced to figure it out, so here is what I suggest you stick to like bubble gum on a bench. ANYTIME you hear this family sick stuff ask IN DETAIL what it is, how they got it, what is the treatment and how are they doing? The more integrated your questions are about the persons illness the less detail they can submit to you in return to validate the illness.

And if you do send money, NEVER send more than $25:)38=950)including transfer fees and exchange rates.

And really alot of them do have health issues. But what can you expect from a lifetime of eating fried foods, overly seasoned foods, a lot of salty foods and sugar-enhanced foodstuffs. You drink a tiny cup of coffee with 2 spoonfuls of sugar in it everyday you will get diabetes. Plus, no one is willing to alter their diets after they have been diagnosed with the illness.

knock on wood, but my wife's dominican mom and dad in their seventies are doing great, of course they have their own mini-finca with chickens, pigs, yucca, platanos, cacao, and they grow their own coffee. everything is cooked over wood in an outdoor kitchen, even though they have a new house with a modern kitchen built and supplied by the nine adult children who are in the U.S. or SD with good jobs. my 72 year old father in law is quick with a knife, hidden in his pants, and when he has extra money it goes to girlfriends, many much younger in age, and his fighting roosters. he was sick, near death, a few years back, went to the hospital in Santiago and then to the big hospital in SD. they could do nothing for him, he was on his way out. then he goes to a vitamin guy/food specialist and now is as good as ever. i would not like to fight him. yes, the in laws, mom and dad show their age but for the most part are very very healthy. i think the difference is that in western medicine the doctors can slow down the inevitable.........we all get old.....some fast ..some slow.......i wish my wife had told me ten years ago to start with the rogaine instead of waiting till i'm nearly bald, all she complained about was the gray...........all i complained about was her beer belly, which is a great thing for a woman to have if she doesn't want sex..............."but i love beer!"

I am ashtonished as well by the amount of diabetes we have here in the DR. It is all carbs they eat. Rice, beans, platanos, yuca, mango, spaghetti... Must go wrong!
It's good for you...no way...Have you seen the bellies of the average dominican m/f?
