Hello,

I am from the US, living here in Santiago with my fiancee for a year. Looking at a Jeepeta, and have a budget of 15,000 US, or 570,000. Have been looking at the Mitsubishi Montero, Mitsubishi Endeavor and Nissan Murano. Any reason to not buy one of the three?? How much negotiating do dealers do here?? Better to put the car in my fiancees name, as she is Dominican and am also looking to build her assets for a tourist visa?? thanks much, tom

I know what I wanna say but you sound so sweet I'm gonna retire my sarcasm for the night.
Good luck, I think any of the 3 would be good. I personally love Muranos.

Personally I like the Montero if you are set on those three.

I'm with SHALENA, you too nice/sweet.

Really your thinking of putting it in her name to build up her assets for a visa?? I hope you joking.... :(

I m with SK. There is so much to say but I will tell you I think the Montero is the best equipped car for the land. And yea...I hope someone can...Come on man! If she cannot acquire assets on her own why would you give them to her? If you MARRY her now she wouldnt need a tourist visa. You didnt think this through man. A $15,000 car??

Sorry couldnt hold back. I feel like I drank dishwater.

"TOM",May Be "Nice",BUT CRIS Colon ISN'T!!!!!

Tom,I will now save you a lot of your time, and more of your money!
"Lucky You!!!"

Answer just three simple questions.
1. Where did you meet her?
2.How many "Dates" before you had sex with her?
3.Does she have her finger nails "All Painted Up Fancy Like"? You know,designs/colors/"Fake" nails?

If you met her in a bar, casino, beach resort town,or,"On Line",drop her!
If you had sex on "Date" #s 1 or 2,drop her!
If she has,"fake nails",hair extension,"Blond" hair,drop her!
If she was/is a "Beach/Mall/Casino Rat",drop her!

I am going to be 65 years old this year,IF my Dominican wife LETS me!:paranoid:
Take my advice,RUN,don't Walk, and, "Do Not Pass "GO"! From the DR!

Guys and gals, don't you read, he's already been living with her for a year. She certainly doesn't dress the part you are painting ( more like student or bank employee). The Montero is the better of the three vehicles. Keep the car in your name- for the obvious reasons ( trust, break-up...etc) bring her to the states on a fiancee visa.

Tom, you have received some good advice, even if some of it was not directly asked for but inferred from your question.
My advice is that while Mistubishi and Nissan are common here, Toyotas is the better option. Something like a RAV4.

If doing it for a tourist visa, you are wasting your time and money.

This is, perhaps, the best of all of the advice you have received..

Go read Hillbilly's Three Golden Rules....if you answer "no" to any of them, then CrisColon's advice is dead on.

I agree with the first phrase (about buying the car) but not necessarily the rest. Equal education - hard to judge that, especially when there is an age difference.
Equal bank accounts- she from a poor country, and probably a poor family - doesn't make her poor in intelligence, ability to get ahead or suceed in life.
The way the she dresses, and I checked out the rest of her pictures, tells me she is probably a student and certainly not a ho. Latitude19 she's got a wonderful smile, and I hope you have a sucessful relationship now and in the future. Some of these old sods mean well, some are bitter and twisted.

Check out Supercarros.com. Enter Toyota Landcruiser Prado, Diesel, $15,000 max. Far better option than the Mitsubishi or Nissan. Take two weeks or so to test drive the 10 best options, and then offer 75% of whatever they are selling it for and negotiate from there.

Remember CarFax. Stay away from 15K's Muranos, Motor/Transmission problems. The newer ones OK. (2009+)

Looks can be deceiving, but I do have some knowledge of the subject, having spent considerable time in my younger years surrounded by beeper girls....etc, not to mention my military experiences in a couple of dozen countries. You're gong by a partial conversation, I'm at least going by a couple of dozen pictures.

Hello, Thanks for the info. I have found, by far, that supercarros is the best site. Question: I have not been in the DR for long. Has the economic downturn here created a surplus of cars and a buyers market?? Are dealers actually looking to dump cars?? thanks, tom

Nope. There has always been a surplus of cars, because dealers never drop prices to "dump" them.

Try going to a couple of the "Car Fairs" they have at the feria ganadera. You'll be amazed at what they have to offer, and the prices will astound you.

JDJones,

Can you give more details on the "Car Fairs" at the feria ganadera? Location, usual dates, any restructions, etc?

Thanks!

If I was you Tom, I would do the following: Since you wanna build up her assets, do yourself a favor and out of the 15 you got, take out 2-3 and invest it in some business under both -hers and your- names. Something like a salon, or a little pica pollo or whatnot. After doing so, have her take an active role in the life of the business that way she shows you how much she is willing to sacrifice for her own salvation.... and as for the car, get something decent that wont hurt your pocket when it comes to gas. Like windeguy said, a RAV 4 would do the trick. Put a down payment on it and pay monthly out of the business. To be honest that its the best approach cuz these women love it when we make it easy for them! Don't be a sucker for love my man...

Can words be confusing. There was a "car fair" at the National Theatre in Santiago last month this time. I misunderstood and thought it was a car show(the international car shows are also at that time, featuring 2012 models and concepts from all the global manufacturers). I get there and I m looking at all these old ass cars(older than 2011). Depressed was the word.

Another solid source for preowned autos, or anything else for sale for that matter, is Lapulga.com.do.
Just enter the name of the auto you want, eg: Murano, or Pathfinder or Prado, and check out the listings. You can then refine the search by date listed to check later for new listings. It is a mix of private owners and dealer listed autos, and the private owner prices are generally better than supercarros. Of course, buyer beware with extra diligence.
