Hello, I am having a bit of trouble finding an airline that will bring my 1 yr old Pit-bull to DR. Because of his breed many airlines restrict him. The only two airlines that i did find that will fly Pit-bulls, either do not fly pets to DR or do not fly pets if the temp. is higher that 75 degrees Fahrenheit (which in DR is like ALWAYS) :ermm: .

Can someone please advise me as to how I can get my dog over to DR. I will be relocating to DR in Aug. and would LOVE to have him with me! Thanks!

Try Continental..... expensive but very good.

Or , do what I'm doing.... wait until Oct 31..... my airline starts animal carriage to RD.

I fly my dog from Canada, not EWR.... cheaper, easier.

I have driven to MIA to fly,.... that works too

Awwww

He looks like Daddy, Cesar Milan's dog who has passed.

Good boy! You'll get here.

Hi:

First of all, where are you flying from? Without that info I can't answer your question other than to say that some airlines have climate controlled luggage and freights bays. Let me know. If you want send me a private message

First off stop calling him a pit bull. Airlines just like many others have a pit bull prejudice. Call him an American Staffordshire Terrier. Its the same thing but sounds better. Problem in the DR is the temperatures. It has to be less than 85 at takeoff and the same at landing. I am flying my three dogs in August and found a flight from Santo Domingo to Miami at 6:20 in the morning that gets into Miami at 8:35. I figure that it cannot be 85 that early. Jet Blue would not take a dog over 20#. Its costing me $160 per dog. If your dog shows unprovoked agression like to the cage handleres they will not take him. If he is unused to flying or has a nervus temper you might consider giving him a tranquilizer. Get him used to the crate before flying. You need to buy an airline approved crate. Its a big pain. Good luck.

Ask the vet to call him an American Staffordshire Terrier on his health certificate. Dominicans are afraid of these dogs. When I live in Bonao and walked my dog who would not hurt a fly the Dominican murmured "muerte" and would cross over to the other side of the stree to avoid us.

Most airlines will not accept a dog that has been tranquilized.

In my case, I had to make a special flight to the US and drive my dogs (Labrador Retriever and Border Collie) to Atlanta.

Each airline has different rules, and you will have to check specifically with each airline. If you're willing to pay big bucks, there are charter flights available.

I suggest going to pettravel.com for information.

I did not suggets "tranquilized". A mild sedative. If your dog has never flown before or is a nervous type the vet can give him something like a valium. He will not be knocked out and lying on the bottom of the cage. Its better than having him scared to death. Ask your vet. Before you do much more go online and look at the airlines posted info on flying dogs. Many say no pit bulls, even nice ones. A/A is charging me $160 per dog from S.D. to Miami. Having to change planes makes it that much more difficult to find flights that do not take off or land on days that are hotter than 84 degrees.

You are giving good advice..... unfortunately, at this time of year - there is little good advice to give.

AA used to be $150.... whether in cabin or w/ the luggage..... MIA or NYC.... flight duration was/is of no consequence.

Connecting flights are tricky.... you cannot always retrieve the dog for a walk, etc...... it becomes a long day.

Summer months are difficult...... October to April are easier .......

As we were taught in business school...

The 6 "P" principle..... Proper Planning Prevents P*ss Poor Performance...

No offense intended.... but you need to plan your plan..

Im not encouraging something bad or dis tasteful but......Theres been a real easy way over the internet to get your dog certified as a "service dog" in which case it could and would fly in the cabin with you. I know this is disrespectful to the true service animals with the time and money spent training them but as a last resort I would use it just not to be seperated from my pet. Hes too damn cute to leave hime behind.

Or he will be knocked out and throw up and choke in it and you will end up with a dead dog. Any good vet will give exactly the same advice, NO sedatives.

Take the advice from WW and me, we have flown dogs over. You cannot enter a dog before end of september on any flight coming from the States so take your precautions, find some body to take care of the dog whilst you are away and make arrangements for flying the dog over in the months that it is possible and in the mean time, let the dog get used to his crate so you will enjoy your reunion with a happy and relaxed dog when its possible.

Have you seen a service animal behave ??

They are impeccable........... will this pit bull lead its owner onto the plane in that manner???

One little glitch and the world will tumble down..

Respectfully.... that is wreckless advice you are giving.

Akin to....."Oh , don't worry about the gun restrictions.... Just tell them you need it for protection . "
Or ... "It's not loaded .... what's your problem??."

Perhaps you should fly the dog as a service animal.... just as a favor... .. eh, what ??

They are pretty comon here, every other teen, early 20's has one or has a buddy who has one. Can you not rehome him in the us and get one here? I always feel sorry for dogs not born here moving to new heat.

What makes you think that the dogs are any different than we are regarding the heat?
They enjoy the warmth.... especially the older , arthritic ones - it warms their bones.

Watch a dog go and lie in the sun ..... ours do all the time... and then go to shade and lie in cool stone or earth.
Just like people.
Our dog's 'sunbathing' is entirely predictable..... 10am, every day it's sunny

Like me, my dogs had to adapt to the heat. Fortunately, the beach is close, and they love it there - as do I. A well informed dog owner can do what needs to be done.

To the OP: Acira is the go-to person on dogs on the forum. She has lots of experience on moving dogs here and lots of other good advice on keeping dogs here int he DR. Send her a private message when you have a question.

Hi:

I checked a couple of airlines out of Washington Dulles Airport. I looks like Delta may take your dog in their cllimate controlled baggage bays. I could not find any restrictions on dog bread. I would go on their web site and take a look than call a rep from Delta to confirm the info before making a reservation. I also looked at American Airlines but they restricted flying certain breads which included yours. Good luck.

Fair enough, I'm sure your dogs would speak up should it be too hot for them. Many people can't settle here for the humidity, they have an option to leave. Just my opinion and I would consider this in my little buddies before dragging them to the sauna.
