I can agree with Barbancourt. The 15 y.o. 5-star, very rare to find, is the best I've ever tasted, period.

My #1 Dominican rum is Siboney red, very nice especially for the price. Except for the upper end local rums, I find the average Brugal and Barcelo a little harsh by itself or neat. I guess the coke makes it more palitable.

But, like Frank mentioned, tastes vary...

No Cuban rums either?...very subjective.

A US based Newspaper might get into some trouble if they included Cuban Rums due to the trade embargo with Cuba.

For me, the basic DR Rums like Carta Dorada are best in a Cuba Libre/Santo Libre because of the strong flavor they add to the mix. One of my favorite rums is Black Seal from Bermuda. It works very well with ginger beer.

Looking at the specific details, one distributor carries 5 and one carries 2. 6 Martinique rums? Really?

Rum from Martinique are very good. I haven't tasted Haitian rum, but given the history, I am guessing that they might be similar in taste...I admit that 6 is a little bit much though !

Flor de Ca?a from Nicaragua is for me, the best flavored rum, from the DR Barcelo viejo is good. I like Jamacian rum also.

They only tested rums made from sugar cane juice not molasses. That rule out all Dominican, Jamaican, Cuban and Bajan rums.

Barcelo Imperial, is #1 for me.

What is really nice is Barcelo Imperial 20 years old rum. It comes in a bottle inside a tin. I could be wrong about the years or even if it is called Imperial , but it is the best on the Island. Costs about $60 if you can find it. Eddy should know what I am talking about and he may have it in Super Super.

Barbancourt

Barbancourt does not belong on the NYT list. Its 5-star is aged well more than the 5 year limit asserted by the article (which tasted the 3-star). Even Barbancourt 3-star aspires to be an aged (anejo) rum and, in that way, is a hybrid of the French (fresh sugar cane) and Spanish (aged molasses) styles. That's not to say that it's not a fine rum - just that the NYT had to torture its definition to get a Haitian rum on the list.

Dominican rums are among the best and are excellent values. My personal favorite, though, is El Dorado from Guyana. Hard to find, but worth it.
