From Sosua-News

"This week in Charamicos, part of Sos?a, there are festive activities every evening. Normally during the Patronales nationally known bands perform, but this year there was not enough money to contract any artists. But Tuesday night it was a party evening as the traditional pole-climbing was on the program. A 5-meter-long stem was placed in the ground and smeared with grease. At the top hung some sausages, a sack with food and an envelope containing money. Local business entrepreneurs donated the prices. The one who was able to successfully climb the pole, could call himself the owner of all these delicious prizes. The young people in Charamicos used a trick to climb up the greasy pole.

"They built up a human tower and the one in top could catch the sausages and the others prices. The envelope containing money (RD$10,000) was divided among the participants. We saw once again that you can have a lot fun with little resources."

The greased pole climbing is the highlight of the annual Patron Saints day in July in Jarabacoa. Awesome fun to watch!
