Supermarket nuisance

Something I'm trying to get used to, but it still bothers me is how people place their supermarket cart already in front of the POS counter and go back in the store to pick up 'something' they forgot, but then stay away for 10 or 15 minutes, or go back and forward more than once, in other words, they weren't done shopping, but used their cart in the way Europeans use their bath towel in an AI resort.

I basically go to the supermarket to pick up stuff we forgot (we live next door to one) so I hardly ever have more than 5 or 6 items. I have been told more than once how disrespectful I am to take their turn in the line (while I place my items on the belt when I get to the counter and there is a cart standing alone). Am I the one being difficult here?

By the way, once in a ZARA store where I was with my wife there was a maid in the line, giving her turn to everyone behind her, her boss was still looking for clothes and the maid was keeping the spot right in front of the counter, people are selfish everywhere in the world, but here it seems they don't even try to hide it.

Pay no mind to these people. Just step ahead of them and check out. When they talk to you, ignore them like they don't exist. Dominicans love to cut lines and have no patience.

When they say something to you, first turn and stare at them with a look that says, "you are an idiot", then turn back to the person at the country and shake your head with a look that says, "some people will never get it". But say nothing.

I've noticed this as well. I simply ask for a manager and explain the situation. Manager then proceeds to yell at the cashier chick/dude.

I just move their cart, and if they say something when they get back I give them the New York stare/look, same as Puryear does. I say nothing, but if my husband is with me they get an earful. The nerve of some people is amazing.

This phenomenon is not unique to the D.R. Happens every day right here in the U.S. too. Actually one of my favorite stories is of an incident I had at the supermarket, (my adult kids call it one of my "Larry David" moments). I was in line and a woman in front of me left the line, (even taking her cart with her), to a product display about 30 or 40 feet away, but still in sight of the line. When she left, I of course moved forward, taking her place. She came back in a bit, after shopping for her extra items, and said to me, "I was in line." My response was "Yea, but you left." She repeated, "But, I WAS IN LINE!", waiting for me to back down and let her back in. In the mean time, 4 or 5 people had lined up behind me; so if I did let her in, I'd be letting her in front of them too. I stared back at her blankly. Just as the person in front of me finished, and I moved to the cashier, she nearly yelled, "JERK!" I replied to her as I pointed to her nearly full cart, "Yea? Well this is a 10 item express lane anyway, so WHO'S THE JERK?". Then moved to the cashier, who shook her head in agreement with my assessment of the situation. LOL To be honest, if she only had 10 items, and a MUCH nicer attitude, I would have let her back in line; but using the speed lanes with more item than you're supposed to is a pet peeve of mine.

that reminds me of a scene a friend saw in a public office in POP. some dude left the line and then tried to squeeze back in. people did not want to let him in so he called a woman who was in front of him as a witness: "estuve detras de ti, verdad?" to which she responded "detras de mi es mi culo" :)
needles to say he did not get anywhere :)

My sister was in Playero years ago, she was in line and the guy in front of her left(appears that he forgot something). A long while later he shows up and says "yo estaba aqui", and my sister with her british accent goes "y yo estaba aqui tambien", didn't let him in, end of story! Go to the back, Jack!

People sure love to cut in line in DR!

Had an incident yesterday with someone standing in line while her daughter continues to shop, then comes to the express line with extra items. When I said something, she explained quite succintly that "we are not in the United States". At that point, I bit my tongue, and that's when the Dominicans in line took turns calling her out. She got by with cutting line, but the verbal abuse she got by other Dominicans left her speechless and embarrassed, and her teenage daughter was totally stunned.

We "CERTAINLY ARE NOT,In The United States"!

Yesterday at "POLA SUPERMARKET" in Arroyo Hondo,I bought 10,000 pesos of groceries.I "pulled up a chair",and sat down to watch as they were "rung up". As 120 pesos of chicken passed over the scanner,it rang up as 240 pesos of "Carne Molida"(ground beef).I stopped the clerk and asked her,"Where's The Beef"? She looked puzzled. Started searcing for the "Beef".I got that mistake resolved.Later at "Supermercado National",and another 4,000 pesos,The "Mac &cheese" rang up at 45 pesos."Wait",I said, how can a box of "Mac&cheese" cost 45 pesos? "It's KRAFT!" she said. It was,"On Sale" at 25 pesos! I resolved that too.
You MUST check all "Sale" items at the code readers before you ckeck out,IF they are working! Then, you MUST watch each item as it is scanned!
Here is ,yet another "scam.
You see an item you need on sale in the newspaper, you go early to get it,it is not available, you are told,"It has not arrived yet",you come back later in the day,and are told,"It's sold out!"
Now that COULD HAPPEN once-in-a-while,but it happens too often to be happenstance,IT IS A SCAM!
Who do you complain to? The management,THEY are the ones responsible! A "government agency"? "HELL" you can't even get the police to respond to an armed robbery,or the fire dept. to come to a fire!
Just do what I do,get 5 pounds of frozen Tiger shrimp, and hide them behind the powdered milk!
Don't get mad,GET EVEN!

It's the old "bait and switch" Chris. It used to be common in the U.S. too... until they passed consumer protection laws. Can't get away with it now... well not all the time anyway. lol

You might be right..... a friend of mine responded to one of those unbelievable car ads that dealers run... you know, really low lease/purchase price....
In fact they only have 1 of those and really don't want to part w/ it at that price.

She insisted as they tried to switch her here and there...

She finally got it and the dealer was not happy.......
She knew her rights....

she can send her thanks to Ralph Nader. LOL Not a big fan of his more recent political hijinx... but his past in consumer protection was awesome.
