hello everybody

Are there any doctors in DR specialized in STD, or the man needs to go to urologist, and the woman needs to go to her gynecologist? I was told that there are no dedicated STD clinics or specialists here, is that true?

rubbish. here in POP there is a clinica for STDs only. it is located opposite from bomberos, in the city center, in the building of salud publico. actually it is a part of salud publico clinic. this is of course public service, i guess it must be free, to some extend. i know that salud publico will test you for free, give free condoms and contraceptive pill...

in any case, public heath system in DR is not so pretty and nice so i recommend urologist/ginecologist. the treatment for most STDs is very simple and fairly cheap: some antibiotics (doxycyclina, most likely) plus some oral pill (fluconazol, sometimes some combination of other antimicotico). girls get ovulos, sometimes.

i run recetas for STDs every day :)

So, every urologist here is a specialist in STD as well? I am from Eastern Europe, in my country urologists are urologists only, and we have special skin diseases and STD clinics/doctors.

Some STD can have some extragenital symptoms, in a mouth for example.. is that still for urologist/gynecologist?

where are you from? i am eastern european too :)

STDs are a business for gino or urologo. always. they will look at the tools, send for tests and then prescribe meds. they will also check mouth and skin, if they present the symptoms. they may refer the patient to dermatologo to check the skin and confirm the diagnosis. all the meds to treat STD are available over the counter, without prescription.

thanks for your answer

as I understand, if I want to test my girl for STD, I need to send her to gynecologist, and I go to urologist for that, right?

can anybody recommend a good English speaking urologist in Santo Domingo?

actaully, if you only want a test to check up her and yourself, and neither of you present the symptoms you can go to internista. he will send you to the lab for test. any lab can do it. with doctors order (firmado y sellado) you can pay for test with your insurance (if you gave one, that is).

yes, this is true but i suggest a doctor since people normally do not know much about STDs, not even what type of STDs are out there. plus, if you have an insurance it is cheaper that way. each of the tests is few hundred pesos...

Shalena,

Didn't you forget a couple more? I know of at least one more that has caused grief when I had my Ukrainian girlfriend.
Trichomoniasis... Not very commonly known and when checked for STD they almost never check for Trich. When they check they mostly check women however lately it has been discovered that men can also be bearer of this sh!t thing.

Symptoms
Typically, only women experience symptoms associated with Trichomonas infection. Symptoms include inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis), urethra (urethritis), and vagina (vaginitis) which produce an itching or burning sensation. Discomfort may increase during intercourse and urination. There may also be a yellow-green, itchy, frothy foul-smelling ("fishy" smell) vaginal discharge. In rare cases, lower abdominal pain can occur. Symptoms usually appear in women within 5 to 28 days of exposure. In many cases, men may hold the parasite for some years without any signs (dormant). Some sexual health specialists have stated that the condition can probably be carried in the vagina for years, despite standard tests being negative. While symptoms are most common in women, some men may temporarily exhibit symptoms such as an irritation inside the penis, mild discharge, or slight burning after urination or ejaculation.

Diagnosis
Trichomoniasis is diagnosed by visually observing the trichomonads via a microscope. In women, the examiner collects the specimen during a pelvic examination by inserting a speculum into the vagina and then using a cotton-tipped applicator to collect the sample. The sample is then placed onto a microscopic slide and sent to a laboratory to be analyzed.
Trichomoniasis has been difficult to diagnose due to the poor sensitivity of the tests; in 2011 a study reported a more reliable test.

Complications
Research has shown a link between trichomoniasis and two serious sequeli. Data suggest that:

-Trichomoniasis is associated with increased risk of transmission of HIV.
-Trichomoniasis may cause a woman to deliver a low-birth-weight or premature infant.
-Trichomoniasis is also associated with increased chances of cervical cancer
-Evidence implies that infection in males potentially raises the risks of prostate cancer development and spread due to inflammation.

Additional research is needed to fully explore these relationships

So it's only lately they have got the grasp that trich could be a can of worms of something even more unplesant.

I have seen lots of Trich. It can also have a watery discharge that doesn't smell, so some women may mistake it for the normal discharge a woman may have.
ALL STDs increase risk for cervical cancer, and ALL STDs can increase a pregnant woman's chance of Preterm delivery if recurrent.

You left out Hepatitis B, C.

Also, you can donate a pint of blood at a blood bank and get a full workup report.
JDJones was right. Any lab will do any tests you want. But be aware that world around blood lab tests have a 10% rate of false results. Been that way for decades, and don't expect it to change.

I DO NOT in ANY way recommend my life style as an example of how to be a "Good Citizen of the World"!!!
But at least my mother loved me.
