in the DR it depends if your traveling a lot making stops, visiting relatives, remember the gallon of gas is about $5.95,
I would guess $3,000, you could always haggle the price

If you are providing a car and gasoline, and he just drives, I would say about 1,500 pesos per day like minimum.

It's not really a helpful comparison to make. If you do, you will come to the conclusion that transport services can earn extremely well per hour, but remember that they may only be working a few hours in the day, sitting around waiting to take their turn for hours on end....

I run into this all the time. The theory is the same anywhere. When you hire a self employed person, freelance, or whatever you want to call it... you're not paying for some guy to work for that period of time... you're paying a "business" to supply a service. When people hire me here in the U.S., (I hate giving hourly rates.. but sometimes have to), I often have to explain this concept. Same for everyone from plumbers to lawyers. The business (even if it is one person) has overhead, business costs, taxes, etc. etc. etc... the list is endless, not to mention as the other poster pointed out... down time (time you can't bill for). These things have to be paid for, and the person has to earn a little money at the end of it. Do you really think your auto mechanic is putting $70 per hour into his pocket??? Not even close.

1,500-2,000 pesos should be enough. It's better to hire a taxi guy and he puts gas on his car. With 1,5K per day they will take the opportunity without hesitation.. Now if you're traveling outside the city you're staying, you might want to add a few more pesos..

That would be for car and his time per day only, expect to pay for gas and meals also. Although salaries are low in the DR, vehicles are not. You are including his vehicle cost and service in the daily rate. Gas, being US$6.00/gallon, makes any driver to require you to pay for gas unless a specific itinerary is negotiated in the original price.

Do you have the answer to the real question:
What is the average monthly income for a Dominican who owns a fairly new car, with operating A/C, decent tires and working lights, AND is unemployed or has enough free time to drive me around for 5 days? BTW, please exclude all taxi drivers from this calculation.

The cost for my wife & I, even from a family member who is a licensed Taxi-driver to spend the day driving from Santo Domingo to Barahona...etc was $100 dollars US.
We have paid several times to have a driver drive us to Santo Domingo, take us around shopping...etc - again $100 US per day. I personally think that's reasonable.

His reasoning is that, if a median monthly salary is US$500, then he can divide it by the number of days in a month, and multiply that by 5. Then add a tip and round it to RD$3,500.

Hi:

The average salary, according to last years stats, was equivalent to about 110.00USD. per week or around 5700.00USD per year.
This includes all professions and people accross the board.
