Best Places for a Single Male (gay) to travel in DR (besides Santo Domingo)

I am looking to enjoy the Dominican Republic as a solo traveler. I know many places cater to families and couples. My main concern is not staying at a hotel/resort full of families and couples (regardless of sexual orientation) and feeling out of place. I really would like to explore Puerto Plata, and was hoping someone could recommend a good place for a non-family man to stay. Sure it would be great to meet a nice guy, but I can do that in Santo Domingo. I want to explore the natural beauty of DR this time around.

I think that the two best places for you are in Cabarete and in Punta Cana ..they advertise that there are two gay hotels in those places and in Punta Cana I feel confident you will meet some like orientated men there .But you may have to pay for the encounters

How about San Juan or Ponce in PR, or Havana in Cuba. What was the purpose of relating to DR1 posters that you are gay ? It sounds like you have been in the DR before, so what are you advertising for? If you are interested in having a good time, does it matter if you are gay or not?

Thanks Kipling! I hear Cabarete is especially good for single travelers. The fact that is near many natural wonders/excursions is an added bonus. I hear the Kite hotel is really nice.

Yes and no AJL. Again primarily I want to visit other places in DR besides Santo Domingo. The main thing is I don't want to go to places where I will be the only single guy among a bunch of people getting married and/or on honeymoon. I suppose me being gay isn't that important, but it is a factor. Would you want to go to an area surrounded only by gays where you might feel uncomfortable being who you are?

I am a happily married man with 3 children and 5 grandchildren. I know who I am and I am very comfortable with myself. Since I do not agree with gay lifestyle decisions, I prefer not to go to areas where it is prevalent. If you had left out the word gay from your post, it would have made more sense to me. The other person who responded to your post actually suggested that you could find a companion for pay. Isnt that prostitution ?

Leaving morals out of the discussion, I think Sosua or Cabarete would be good places for anyone to visit.... There are a variety of people and plenty of activities for any person's particular interests. But I haven't visited Punta Cana... If you want an out-of-the way, non-judmental, non-inclusive inexpensive place to stay, you could check out sun camp
website and consider volunteering among the Haitian community.

Trust me, from firsthand experience in most any AI resort in Punta Cana you can manage to have a great time if you are traveling alone. Stay at a resort that is centrally located to the nightlife spots like Mangu and you will quickly meet like-minded individuals. Even employees of the hotel (of both sexes) will become a lot more friendly and talkative when they realize you are unattached if you just smile and talk to someone who interests you. (If you want to do anything with a resort employee, you will most likely have to meet somewhere off the resort as they will not risk their jobs by doing anything more than chat with you on the resort property) My first trip to the Dominican Republic many years ago as a young, single, gay, gringo was to Punta Cana, and I was stunned at how bold and forward the employees of the hotel were if you just smiled and chatted with them a little bit. (I spoke to them in English then, as my Spanish wasn't as good then as it is now) Going out to casinos, places like Mangu, Imagine, or any of the local hangouts you will quickly be accosted by locals and once they figure out what interests you then you are bound to have a good time and meet some new friends. My first trip to Punta Cana years ago I would take motoconchos to get around and to my shock the first motoconcho I ever took at night in Punta Cana propositioned me right out of the blue during the ride! I thought it was just a freak thing until it happened again, and again, and again (only while using motoconchos in Punta Cana and only at night). It was then that I realized that the DR is not nearly as anti-gay as people say. Even recently on my last trip to PUJ, I was in a hotel with my other half who is Dominican and there was a male housekeeper who was mopping the floors in the hall outside our room and apparently noticed that two guys were staying together so on another occasion I was returning to the room alone and said buenas tardes and smiled to the housekeeper as I walked by and went to my room. 10 minutes later as I was getting out of the shower to my shock the housekeeper was in the room making up the room knowing that I was in the shower and pretended like he didn't know I was in there! He then hit on my but I turned him down because mi novio es muy guapo, celoso, etc.

It sounds from your post that you have been to Santo Domingo before, so I won't list the many popular venues there. Unfortunately, outside the capital, there is not really any venues exclusively gay. That said, I've managed to have great times throughout the years in La Romana, Juan Dolio, and all over the north coast. (Puerto Plata, Sosua, and especially Cabarete) Staying in Sosua is great because prices for accommodations are generally reasonable and you have easy access via public transport to both Cabarete and Puerto Plata.

The reality is that most Dominicans are totally closeted, and many would never be caught dead in gay venues in the capital. Most meet each other online, and there are many websites that have lots of Dominicans online. If you are staying in other parts of the DR, especially on the north coast, and want to meet better quality guys and not sankies, you would do well to meet them there first.

There are better ways to volunteer than to put money in Diane Pellerin's dump.

It sounds to me as if you were drawn like a magnet to this thread because it had "gay" in the title so that you could state your opinions on homosexuality. Maybe it would be best to leave the comments to those who are willing to help the poster who has just tried to make his situation clear.

He is asking about where he can go and feel comfortable so he wont be around people like you. People that will judge him without knowing him.

I really appreciate the positive feedback. My gut is telling me to go to Cabarete and to stay at the Kite Beach Hotel.

So go and explore the natural beauty. Whether you are gay or not is irrelevant for that. As for staying in a resort for families and couples and feeling out o fplace, that is unavoidable since 99.9% of all resorts cater to families and couples. No matter where you go you will be "out of place" since you are gay

~The OP is only asking for advise as to where to stay and enjoy himself to explore the DR as a single traveler....

~He didn't ask where to go to hook up, for how much and with whom~

Geezzz....get off your pedistals and stop being so judgemental and opinionated whereas answering questions that werent even asked or implied...
