Hello to all, has anyone travelled this road recently to Santiago? What are the conditions presently? Last time I travelled on that road (Dec 2010) it was shot to HELL!! Why doesn't the gov't fix this vital link between the two big provinces like they are doing in Constanza and Jarabacoa? :ermm:

Have a great day!!

They have spent $$$ on the other two routes.

We tried taking the CT from the North Coast just a few months ago in our 4WD and turned back after less than a mile.

I reported on that road at the beginning of the year, and most unfortunately, I traveled the whole thing. There are spots where it is as bad as a cowtrack and in places it is worse. Most of the little businesses along the road are closed up for lack of traffic.

This administration has no regard for history and this road is beautiful when it is in good shape. You can't go fast, there are no big trucks, and the sights are gorgeous...it is a freakin' waste that it has not been maintained.

All true. But at least the Jimao road is in decent shape.

Do any of the local munincipalities have any responsibility for any road maintenence?
Have any funds been recieved by them and diverted to other things?

Just asking since on Long Island, the governments of Nassau and Suffolk counties have the responsibility for their roads, and in Florida Palm Beach county is responsible for theirs. Some funds come from the Federal/ State but not in work but $ only.

I remember when Autopista Duarte was widened in the 80"s. About 50% of the $ and all of the equipment wound up in the hands of family and friends of the president.

I saw it from the air last week and it appears to have more washed out areas then road at this point. Too bad as not being able to use it has increased our drive time to Santiago by at least 30 min.

I traveled back and forth on this road last week.
The main dangerous thing are the cutaways....where the road isn't there anymore....in about 3 or 4 places...and the road suddenly is only one car width wide, next to a precipice.
Other then that if you take it easy it is not that bad.

They are going to build a new road over that one, with expanded size in between lanes, shoulders, etc... The MOPC, ODEBRECHT already carried out the survey and other works for that.

The heavy equipment is busy on the new Autopista El Coral and others, but as soon as they advance a bit more with the primary layers, they will move them to start the Turistica anew!

It's going to be great road to drive on! Same will happen with the tunnel between Santiago and Puerto Plata, etc...

The dates can be as early as late this year or the first months of 2012, it all depends on how fast can the brazilians move assets there.

The pace of construction in the Coral is picking up real fast!

Where exactly is this road going to and from. Saw it from the air and it looks quite impressive.

This is a tremendous undertaking. It may seem extravagant now, but the dividends it will pay in the future are many. Just the difference in traveling time, not having to go through the traffic in La Romana and Higuey will make it a pleasure to travel. I, for 1 will try to travel to Punta Cana/ Barvaro 2-3 times more per year when it is up and runnng.
You can see why this type of project had to go to more experienced and serious people, and not wind up a big mess.

I think it starts somewhere just west of La Romana (or maybe just east) to the "new" Punta Cana/Bavaro highway. I saw some of the construction while driving from to SD to Bayahibe a few months ago...this really is a massive undertaking and very impressive to see...hopefully a decent amount of the money earmarked for this project is actually going to pay for the project.

And Pichardo...are you saying the Brazilian company building the Coral Highway has been contracted to repair the Carretera Turistica?

Estimates on time saved from Capitol to Barvaro= 2 hours. With the bypasses, No going through La romana city or higuey. Almost a straight shot from Bayahibe to Punta Cana

The Autopista Del Coral is the one in red:

The Coral highway starts where the Autovia del Este ends.

This is the actual RD-3 Autovia del Este:
