Has anyone driven this recently? I haven't made this drive along the North Coast road for a few years. Back then it took me about 4 hours if I remember correctly.
Any updates would be appreciated.

Read the new highway to Las Terranas thread.
It will reduce the time considerably if open when you drive.

POP to Cabrera is about 2 hours
Cabrera to el Catey is 1 hour
el Catey to Playa Coson by the new road is 15 minutes - they say
Your 4 hour estimate may be 1/2 an hour shorter -- but you can't go wrong w/ 4 hours
Great, thanks!
New highway from El Catey to Las Terrenas is still not open. Its possible that they stop you.
The road condition between Puerto Plata is good. Not like several years ago. I did it last week in 3 hrs, normal driving.
i may not live there, but not new to driving there. Ive been staying as an expat off and on for 15 yrs. So where is this new highway? is it along the north side? if so, would be nice.
No... new shortcut to LT and Playa Coson off #5.
Starts at el Catey and runs along the west coast of the Samana Peninsula - pretty, I'm told.
Reduces the drive considerably - 15 minutes from the airport to Playa Coson.
No more of the "Over the Hill Gang" road trips.
Also, most - if not all of the main #5 has been resurfaced.
Almost enjoyable now - no more pothole dodging and less flat tires.
