July was the last time I flew to SD and they were charging $1400 to take me from the airport to metro station, but I ended up paying $900.

Generally speaking, Is it possible to negotiate to under $900 or is that as low as they go?

Thanks.

Theoretically anythings possible, that is, if you find a good old taxi driver.

Once I landed at SDQ at 2 AM. Got a taxi. The fair was quoted $800RD.
I had a $1000RD note. He said He did not have any change.
I stated that I wasn`t expecting any change.

No problema

You did good. Be happy. Driver has to live too. Years ago I was quoted RD$1000, so you got a good deal.

I just paid $1300.00 to Carib Tours. Could have done it for $800.00-$900. In a hurry.

900rd is a good price. the taxi office charges 1500rd. the lowest i got it was 1200rd. A trick is to get a taxi driver who hasnt checked back in with the taxi overlord in the main floor. If you go to the 2nd floor you will get some stragglers who are legit taxis who just dropped someone off and dont want to pay the taxi overlord.

It is a different animal when negotiating with city taxis to the airpost versus an airport taxi to the city. The airport taxis will usually not undercut eachother in negotiations. The city taxis will cut their friends throat to get a fare.

Believe it or not on one of my trips and at a friend's bachelor party we partied away in club SUTRA [i am sure some of the guys here know which club I am referring to :) ha ha]. In any case I walked out of there with 'club money' which of course is of no use to me outside of the club...But I did manage to convince the taxi driver to accept my 'SUTRA dollars' as payment for my cab ride back to my resort in Juan Dolio. Yes sir, anything is possible! :)
