Hi there,

I am stuck trying to calculate the cost for a wall 6 to 7 feet high around a 400 m2 lot (20 meters by 20 meters).
I can't figure out how much concrete and iron bars would be needed.
Does anybody has an estimate?

Thanks a lot!

You'll probably need about 2300 blocks, 475 80lb bags of concrete and 16 20' pcs of #4 rebar.

Blocks: 6 or 8"?
No sand?
No gravel?

donP
I guessed 8".

I never attempted to do a job estimate, just some basics. As an engineer, I'll bet you could offer some volumes of sand and gravel in addition to my estimates.

Block size, good question... Does it matter regarding the height? Should one use the 8" ones for higher stability? But it won't fall on one while leaning against it when it is 6" blocks, I guess :)? Then again I'm no expert...

What about the cost? That looks like close to 400 - 500 thousand?

@cobraboy:

Wow, around 475 bag of concrete? Means a bag for each 5 blocks? Never thought it would need that much concrete...

Concrete or cement? I was going to give my 2pence but it seems we are not on the same page, at all. It's been a while but I didn't think it had been long enough for me to forget all and become so confused by simple basics.

Errr, is concrete and cement not the same? Thought it is, getting confused now, too....
Concrete for the footer and to fill in the holes with the rebar. Mortar for the rest. Cement is the binder in both.

Basicly, Concrete is cement with sand and aggregate, and mortar is cement with sand...

The footer, got it, that explains the amount of bags, OK. But that would still be the naked wall, i.e. to cover it would be more mortar (?) needed? Jeez, that would cost me more than the lot was I'm afraid...

Yep. Stucco is best but Dominicans often add more sand to mortar and use that.

AND, unless you want the wall to evenutally weather and weaken, you need to prime and paint it...

Which opens the question how many gallons of paint are and what kind of paint is needed and the cost of it :(

Anybody want to buy a lot? :) ....just kidding.

So, looks like the cheapest part in the calculation are the blocks.... Was thinking in a cheaper way to get a wall, but not possible I guess since the most pricey part is the cement and cannot be spared...
