Can we put a step by step thread up for the process from start to finish for those considering buying and riding a motorbike legally in DR.

So, you have bought your bike, but with no plates, you've got the bike in the garage and can't wait to get on the road, you want to get the bare minimum requirements to get legal, (but ............ is better), so first of all you need to ........................................
.........
........
....
Always be sure the last owner hands over ............. if second hand.
You will be fine with ............... licenses
The whole process should only cost........
And now you finally ride off into the sunset.:ninja:

The place where you bought the bike should get you your matricula. You pay them around 1500 pesos. Then you should get a liability insurance, most likely form Pepin, which costs around 1200 to 1500 pesos per year, and many BANCAS (places that sell lottery tickets) sell them. I think because that insurance was distributed by LEIDSA. I don't know if they still do it though. You should buy a helmet and have a license, Dominican or foreign one. Then, get some gasoline in the tank and off you go ...

You can already get a liability insurance for 300 pesos per year. A lot of farmacias sell them
Plates you can get with the matricula at the city hall... price is 1000 rds
Helmets start at 300 rds, but admittedlyy they are crap
If you buy the bike second-hand you have to be sure you get the correct matricula, and you need some sort of sales-contract in which the previous owner confirms he sold you the bike.

If you buy second hand have it checked out before you pay by a good mechanic, and change the oil immediately. A crappy second hand car is a bitch, but a crappy second hand bike can be very dangerous.

If you buy new, a lot of the sellers handle all this for you.

Good luck, and enjoy

As rubio says the agency that sold you the bike should get you the matricula and insurance. Until they arrive they will give you some papers that you need to have on you at all time until the insurance card and matricula arrives.

As far as a used bike, the owner needs to give you the original matricula. Contracts aren't usually needed for small amounts.
