The purpose of this thread is specifically to offer a space to share details regarding the life and death of Solange (Sonia) Pierre, an internationally recognized human rights activist and polarizing public figure. Examples could include upcoming memorials, reactions from the DR and international community as published in the media, information about the future of MUDHA, etc. Perhaps some have worked with her or met her and would like to share some memories.

Note: A previous thread focusing on the announcement of her death, http://www.dr1.com/forums/general-stuff/119744-sonia-pierre-dead.html, was closed as commentary veered toward debate of the legal condition of the Haitian-Dominican population in the Dominican Republic. Please keep in mind that this thread is not intended for debate on that topic and that there are numerous other threads where posters can express their views. Sonia's standpoints and approaches, especially about the rights of persons of Haitian descent in the DR, will continue to provoke controversy. Surely we can express our diverse views regarding her person as an important public figure in the Dominican Republic in a respectful manner.

A few recent things...

Press release from the US Dept of State regarding her death:

The Death of Human Rights Activist Sonia Pierre
"We offer our sincere condolences to her family and to all the communities she touched in her lifelong fight against injustice in the Dominican Republic."

An article from a Church World Service worker offers views of many shades on her professional relationship with Sonia Pierre:

Sonia Pierre: A colossus of a heart demanding justice - AlertNet
"The urgency she felt about everything and the risks she took never allowed her to rest. She's resting now."

A Global Fund for Children video of a recent visit she made to their office:

She looks so young and healthy!

A lot of commentary that the stress from her work was extremely detrimental to her health...
