We have been in the country for 40 days. We are planning to stay until the end of June 2012. Where can we go to pay the extended stay tax. We are in Sosua. Would this service be available at Puerto Plata airport?

You either wait until you leave via an airport to pay the fine or go to Migracion in Santo Domingo to try and extend your stay legally. Most people opt for option 1.

Wait until you go to the airport. Know what amount you should pay and have it in pesos. There is a chart
floating around DR1.

pay when you leave

032 De 30 dias a 3 meses 800.00
033 De 3 meses a 9 meses 1,000.00
034 De 9 meses a 1 a?o 2,500.00
035 De 1 a?o a 1 a?o y 6 meses 4,000.00
036 De 1 a?o y medio a 2 a?os 5,000.00
037 De 2 a?os a 2 a?os y 6 meses 6,500.00
038 De 2 a?os y medio a 3 a?os 9,000.00
039 De 2 a?os a 5 a?os 14,000.00
040 De 5 a?os en adelante 17,000.00

When you do leave, take a copy of the current overstay fees with you to make sure you don't overpay.

Depending on how long you have overstayed, it is not unknown that the overstay will be ignored if you place anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand pesos in your passport when you present it at exit.

It's not illegal to overstay your tourist card's validity. It's precisely for that reason that the taxes for extended stays exist and are charged at the airport upon departure. When we first came to the country 15 years ago, we used to make the trip to Migracion and extend our stay but after a while we realized it wasn't worth it and we sometimes ended up not even getting charged when we left the country. I would say it's a question of each person's preference. If someone prefers to do the legwork and extend their stay at Migracion, then by all means go ahead. But if you don't want to go thru that and it doesn't keep you awake at night, then just pay upon departure.

This is definitely wrong! I agree that is common practice to overstay and usually nothing happens but your stay is illegal.
You will feel it if you get caught in an accident or other situations which require a legal status. I know some people who signed a purchase agreement which was later cancelled by a judge because at the moment of the signature of the documents the person had stayed longer than 30 days in the country without an extension authorized by immigration authorities.

Ok I get the gist of it. We are not planning on purchasing a residence at this time. We are staying until end of June in 2012. We do drive, so the idea of running into more problems in case of an accident concerns me. To legally extend, do we have to go to Santo Domingo or can we do this in Puerto Plata (at the airport)??

I would go to the airport first and ask there. If they say you have to go to Santo Domingo they certainly will be able point you in the right direction. Please post the result here. I am sure there are others who would like to know too.

Friend called me tonight on skype asking about the fees when leaving, said he'd heard that they might be increased. I checked their DMG site and didn't see anything but he said the change was to be made in the new year. Does anyone know about this?

It is very easy except for the trip. Just go to the counter and pay the fees. They will give for maximum three months. They will ask nothing. I had done sevaral times earlier but now I leave to the airport when I am leaving.

Where would one get a copy of such? Would a printout of the above post impress them? I don't even have a printer, nor do I suppose I could figure out how to print off this forum if I did!

Is this the location on the Malecon near university area? Does this give you the same exact rights as leaving the country and returning, meaning re-validating your foreign drivers license?
