I am thinking of buying a new camara, a while ago Robert posted and recommended the Canon f90 or 95. I am not an expert, just love to take pictures and carry with me a handy camara. Any recommendations?

There are lots and lots of compact cameras available and on a message board like this you are going to get a lot of different recommendations based on the camera each person is using.

However, I would not rely just on that. There is some excellent information available on the internet by people who test these cameras and give their reviews. I suggest that you check some of them out.

don't know if this is Kosher to mention here... Mods please remove post if it's outside of T.O.S. rules ... but there's a good site for recommendations by a photographer / blogger named Ken Rockwell that gives product reviews and real life evaluations. Note though, that he does get compensation from seller when products are purchased through links on his site.

Like Ken said, there are a lot of very good cameras out there for you to choose from. I can definitely recommend the Panasonic Lumix line. No matter which one you choose, definitely invest in the largest memory card your camera will support (check the manual) and an extra rechargeable battery!

I really love my Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH 8 MP Digital Camera. It's a few years old so there might be a newer version. Takes great pictures and is light.

I'm a photographer, and own 5 Nikon DSLR's (of varying vintage), for work use (plus a bunch of old film cameras)... but I use a Lumix (think it's a ZS10 iirc) for my snapshot camera. They have great Leica lenses, and more importantly they have a zoom range that extends well into the wide range, which is difficult to find in compact digital cameras. Digicams are generally fine in the tele range... but wide angle is difficult due to the small image format of the sensors.

At present I'm looking for same. Will probably go with the Canon Powershot A 1200. Two things they have gone back to with this. Uses AA batteries rather than Lithium and has an Optical viewfinder. Very good for the novice. Staples has a special now for $8o.oo other retailers are $90.00 or more. Purchase whatever card you want. I'm going to wait a couple more weeks to see if the price drops further.

Staples sends out $25 off of $75 purchase coupons to their email subscribers and/or if you google the Staple coupon someone might have an extra one.

The canon S-series is definitley an amazing line of cameras (90, 95, 100), but I'm not sure if it's exactly what you may be looking for. Their biggest selling points are that you have full manual control over aperture, iso, shutter speed, and they come with an F2.0 lens, but if you just wanted to put something on auto and click away, it may be a bit overkill (btw, they are kind'a pricey as well as the newest model s100 goes for a bit over $500).

I have a Nikon D80, a Lumix DMC-LX5 ( Great camera), several Can point & shoots - they all have strong points and week points. Maingirl takes great photos with a Nikon D70.

I agree, Bob... in fact ALL cameras have strong points and weak points... even my favorite Nikon D3s. The very best camera for anyone is the model that they will use the most and enjoy all the photos they've taken. :)

Thanks Bob I now use a Canon 60d which is semi pro, for my point and shoot I use the Canon Powershot SD1400 IS, 140 bucks at Walmart and I am very happy with it. Here's an example.
