There was some coverage about this few months ago.

The Grauniad article has more details:

Brown is believed to have been arrested because he had been living in the Dominican Republic on false documents, diplomatic sources said. The Guardian has obtained copies of Brown's false identity papers and passports using the name Darren Patrick Nally.

The fugitive enjoyed a millionaire's lifestyle while on the run. He lived in gated communities yards from some of the most pristine beaches in the Caribbean, drove a series of 4x4 vehicles and was a regular at exclusive golf courses.

In Punta Cana, he could often be seen walking his dog ? named Charles, after the former Lib Dem leader.

Since 2008 Brown has used the name Nally to embark on a series of ventures that included a real estate business which has opened a subsidiary in the Bahamas.

Last February, he was investigated in the Dominican Republic over an oil deal after being accused of failing to honour a contract for 4,820 tonnes. He was ordered to be held in custody for three months.

No - but from the news report on this morning's news (BBC) it would appear he is now staying in a gated (and high walled) community in Higuey!

Since there is no extradition treaty with the UK, perhaps the Dominican officials will see fit to "deport" him back to the UK after he serves his time here for falsification of his identity. Or is that wishful thinking?

Secondary thought: I wonder who will be living in his house next?

This reminds me of an acquaintance of mine, Simon Odoni, a UK citizen who was arrested by the Dominican authorities and then spirited to the United States for incarceration where he continues to languish after nearly 18 months in jail with no trial. Suffice it to say, the US legal authorities have an amazing strength here in the DR regardless of nationality or treaties. You get crosswise with them and they WILL haul your ass back!

Castellmonte,

So, is this the Simon Odoni aquaintance that you are referring too:

Three attorneys named in $100M scam based in bay area
Paul Robert Gunter, 60, of Odessa and his daughter, Zibiah Joy Gunter, 26, of Oldsmar, led the team that hijacked the identities of 54 publicly traded companies and sold bogus stocks to victim investors in Ireland and the United Kingdom, prosecutors said.

According to court records, Texas attorneys Roger Lee Shoss and Nicolette Loisel, and New York lawyer Lawrence S. Hartman illegally acquired the identities of the dormant shell companies.

Simon Andrew Odoni and Richard Sinclair Pope, the United Kingdom citizens, are charged with facilitating sales of fraudulent stock to investors. Odoni and Pope also controlled the flow of money from victim investors into bank accounts that the pair could access, their charges state

Suffice to say that is by his own consent as Federal Speedy Trial Act guarantees the right to go to trial within 70 days of being charged unless waived by defendant.

Well it must be Very Hard for a Brit to hide out here.. I would think that they would ALWAYS just stick out.. There are not many Brits here and they do not do languages or accents very well.. how can I say this.. they are not that culturally "adaptable" .. will always be so very very British forever

would have thought he would have picked Argentina ...

He was living in Arrecife, an expensive expat enclave in PCR&C, under an assumed name, so he wouldn't have stood out. Apparently he only got caught because he couldn't resist engaging in fraud here in the DR.
It had seemed like a safe haven, but Brown made a critical error: he apparently could not stop ripping people off. He is understood to have racked up hundreds of thousands of pounds in debts on luxury villas and expensive cars, persuading local investors to hand over cash for a succession of fictitious business deals.
>>>
A villa owner leased him her large property after she was told he was a wealthy and reclusive composer for rock stars. Brown is said to have gone without paying thousands of pounds in rent and departed so hastily that he left his clothes behind.
Although this contradicts:
Brown was living at the six-bedroom villa he had purchased a few months ago in the gated Arrecife development at the vast Puntacana Resort, where his neighbours included fashion designer Oscar de la Renta.
Situated on the La Cana golf course, it must have felt like a dream hideaway for a man who went on the run from Britain with just two golf bags. The villa also has its own snooker room, decorated with maps of the Caribbean, and an extensive covered terrace leading down to the swimming pool.
