We know the taxis charge around $150u.s. from Cabarete to El Catey Airport.

Is there a Bus company that goes directly to the Airport?

If there isn't, you could go public to Nagua and taxi from there.

Or even go public to the Autopista and get a taxi for last little bit.

Transportes Papagayo 809-749-6415 leaves Puerto Plata Hospital around 6:45am once a day for Samana. They stop in front of Janet's but will stop anywhere in Cabarete/Sosua if you call them. I was told they go through Cabarete at about 7:15am. To be safe, I would be in the sub stop at 7am. They stated it is a blue bus (not purple) but I wouldn't trust that what we may consider purple is shade of blue for Dominicans. They will stop at the airport entrance for you.

There's also the Las Terrenas bus, 829 772 6608, that usually is at the Bon Ice Cream in Cabarete at 2pm .... but the guy recommends you call so he knows to stop.

I have talked to Transportes Papagayo regarding a drop off at El Catey. I was told that if you arrange it, they will drop you inside the airport. Give them a call. They don't speak English.

That was nice of you expat, Suzannel, neither go from Cabarete. You would have to go back via Santiago/Santo Dominigo if you wanted to take Caribe Tours.

Sorry for resurrecting an older thread, but was thinking of driving to Samana from Cabarete later this month. Does anyone have a sense of the travel time/road conditions. I was thinking a day trip, but didn't want to have to race around to get there and back.

Thanks.

probably on the longer side of 3 1/2 hours, DRob.

I did the 'day trip' to Samana from Cabarete to see the whales a few years ago.
Left about 6am and back about 8pm, stopping in Las Terrenas for a leisurely lunch and dealing with darkness & rain on the way back.
The roads were bad at that time, really bad.
Road condition much better now, at least back in December.

Road is pretty good.....

Cabarete to Cabrera is about an hour...

Cabrera to el Catey airport is another hour....

45 minutes more ( or less) to Samana

Allowing 3 hours will be sufficient..... it's actually a bit less......and clear sailing on the roads

Going 123's LT route will add to the trip.

Might be fun to do the whales and overnite in LT w/ dinner before returning...
