On Sunday Feb 12 at 3pm in Puerto Plata there will be a unique discussion of the story of the Jews in Sosua told by one of the original settlers as well as a slide presentation of some of the rare artifacts from the museum. During WWII one of the few places that Jews could find refugee was in the DR. In the 1940s the DR accepted Jewish refugees who were settled in the swampy areas of an abandoned banana plantation in Sosua. Somehow against all odds they carved out a city and established a cheese and bread industry. Few of those families are still in the area so this is a unique opportunity to hear from one of the few remaining. It is being hosted by The Meeting Place, calle Juan Bosch 60, Puerto Plata. Sosua' Jewish community

Fascinating discussion yesterday in Puerto Plata at The Meeting Place. It is indeed nice to have a place where such talks can take place. One of the things that was said is that the museum in Sosua is not open for very many hours and that the story of the community -- past and recent present -- is not easily accessible to tourists. This is a shame because the contributions of this community to the area and the welcoming response given to the original settlers is one of the positive stories that need to be known. I know that there are several books -- in English and German -- but it seems not easily available to the tourists.
