Try WhiteBeard's Resort in front of Playa Dorada.
Before it was called Field Of Dreams Hotel.
www.whitebeardsresort.com
The standard room is nice at $40 per night.
I stayed there twice now and happy both times.

Its been awhile since I have been to the malicoln, when your driving from sosua towards puerto plata just as you arrive into puerto plata theres a circle there and a baseball field, if you make that right and go down theres th malicoln , the last time I went there they were doing construction? did they ever clean that beach area up? do people go there to go swimming and hang out there ?there used to be some sort of casino there but not much else unless you went almost to the end , there was an italian restaurant, has it changed there ?any better?

He said he was travelling with elderly father and walkability is important. He wants to explore Puerto Plata. How do you suppose Whitebeard's Resort fits? It is way outside of town and not even walkable to Playa Dorada for an elderly man. Hotel Lomar fits his situation better.

Another GOOD option, nice location....same, stayed there a bunch of times. A little ratty....(run down)....but it works...

Portifino hotel, another possibility...close by, I think same owners....(Lomar).....can't remember the room #'S... but some of them in the Lomar have some incredible views of the ocean.....

Another bonus at the Portifino, restaurant right there...pretty good Pizza.......
