I was in the DR last weekend and had a chance to go over to POP and see the Carnaval celebration on Feb 19th. Here are a few photos I took:

Some of my earliest memories of the DR are from Carnival while my folks were working for the Peace Corps in the 60's. I was a little kid and they wore costumes of red, orange, yellow and black made from chicken feathers along with paper mache masks. For some reason the costumed folks were beating kids with inflated pig bladders tied onto sticks. It was harmless, but it was pretty scary from my viewpoint.

I was only in the DR for 5 days but this day was by far the most fun I had. Getting out of Sosua and driving over to POP and just hanging around the locals made the trip even more enjoyable. Here are some more pics from that day:

The funny thing was that everyone knew I was American. I don't know if it was because I was Black, or because I was wearing shorts, a tank top and had a camera hanging around my neck but whenever someone spoke to me they always started out in english.

I'll probably return to the DR north coast during the American Memorial Day weekend in May so I hope to get some more photos of the DR then. IMO this is the most photogenic place in the Caribbean.

I like how the young boys will run around the POP carnaval and, with their straps in hand, strike an unsuspecting, callipygous senorita's culo......lol.............
