Bad experience at the Casino at Ocean World

My wife and I decided to let our hair down last night
(while we still have some) so we went to the casino.
We discovered they had changed things and you can only
use dollars in the slot machines and you get a ticket when
you cash out. So we exchanged a few pesos into dollars
at a rate of 41. Kinda expect that in a tourist
place. After playing on one machine
I decided to move to another, so I cashed out. I
tried to put the ticket in another slot machine but
it wouldn?t take it. Turns out you have to take it to
the caja and exchange it for dollars. Then use the dollars
at the next slot. The lady short changed me by 90 cents.
She explained she can not give coins. Sure you can, I'll take
pesos. She said no. After a shouting match another lady
came to the window and gave me a whole dollar. They must be making some
money off of folks that don't know they need to cash in even dollar amounts.
So take dollars and cash in on even dollars and you'll be fine. Not sure
why they use tickets if the machines won't take them. Seems like a bad idea.
They should probably wait until they figure the entire process out before
putting it out there. We wont be going back. Now I feel better. LOL

I suggest you go up to Atlantic City on the $5 bus and get a free roll of quarters with the other blue hairs or perhaps the Racino @ Yonkas is more your speed!

Ocean World Casino is probably the most legit casino on the North Coast, if not the entire country. I am sure the owner will be happy to PAYPAL you the .10 you are bitching about here. I thought this was going to be another SUPER KENO thread, what a letdown!

Maybe the OP would have accepted a few Chiclets instead...

fair play

I can understand the casino not having small change and you should always play until you don't have small change to be paid out. If change less than a dollar is such a big problem I would not be going to a casino where there is a good chance of me leaving penny less. I think you should be thankful you had something to cash in.

Although for the individual person, 90 cents should not ruin their casino experience, you also need to look at the principal here. Add this up over one year and that is a lot of extra cash that the casino are making. There should be the same system as the supermarkets, round it down if it is less than half a peso, round it up if it is more, this way there can be no arguaments.

I'm not a big casino guy or gambler anyway, and .90 U.S. isn't going to break the bank, but it's the principle of the thing. It's so typically Dominican to not have change, AND... if there is any "rounding" WHY is it ALWAYS at the expense of the customer? If you're in business, HAVE CHANGE. (I guess especially bigger businesses.) IF you're going to round to the nearest dollar ... OK, fine... but round up AND down, following the usual rules of mathematics. .50 and more... round up.... .49 and less, round down. The Dominican rules for rounding: .50 and up... screw the customer .49 and less... screw the customer.

It has always amused me that punters could lose thousands of dollars quite happily with a smile on their face but on the same day give them one dodgy 5 buck prawn salad and they feel mortally offended.
I suppose everybody wants a fair shake, but come on.....

This is just silly.

I know some casino people in the D.R. and they are the dodgy ones that get a lot of grief on this board.
They know about casinos in the D.R. and even they say that that Ocean World is about the only truly preofessionally run joint on the island.
You will not find them doing business in there.

Get over it.

To have an odd 90? payoff would indicate you were playing a penny, nickel or dime machine. You ask why don't they roundup to the nearest dollar. Because I can guarantee you will cashout with 60? every time. You ask why don' t they have coin. Because not a single bank in the DR deals in foreign coin. Try to deposit US coin into a dollar account at a Dominican bank and see what they say. I agree with Tambo, Ocean World Casino ( and American Casino in Paya Dorada) runs a very legitimate operation.

DONT YOU GET IT??? everything is scam down here!! i understand how the op feels, its not the money.... its that they rob you right to your face by chargin a ridiculous exchange rate, then they rob you again by not givin you the right change....and then they got there hands out for a tip....yes the casino is one of the better ones...but when you compare the treatment you get as a gambler in A.C or Vegas... its kinda of a disapointment...

one the other side, its betr than my costa rica casino experience.... played 3 spins of the wheel in roulette,, $100 dollars each... first 2 spins i lose, they rip the money off the table like im gonna try to take it back.... third spin, i hit a number!! they call over some pitboss or who ever he was and tells me, they werent going to pay me cuz my hand hit the table (after the ball had stopped).. within 2 minutes security guys are behind me waiting for me to make a stink...so when you lose you lose, when you win you lose.....ummm.....talk about being robbed without a gun....obviously we left right afterwards....lol

The Ocean World Casino is under a transition stage. They are getting new and more player friendly games. I would hate to hear this revue 2 months ago, when all the games were old and boring. Hate that anyone is having a bad time in
a casino , however I am glad to hear they gave you a dollar. However this ticket out system is a lot more user friendly than a bucket of coins to carry around. US dollar conversion ? Have not found anywere in area that will refuse to take one. Also think about the issue of change with multiple types of bills, always some type problem. I.E. Exchange rate, round up/down 2-3 peso Can't always make eveyone happy. That being I.M.O. , This system is not the same as in Las Vegas, you don't ticket in ticket out, your not at Harrahs.

To give the OP the benefit of the doubt, he took the ticket in to change to USD because he can't gamble the ticket directly.
So to me that's 90c per transaction, not 90c at 'cash out time'.

You may not think 90c per transaction is a lot of money, but if you're betting even 5$ per transaction on a slot machine, that's a 20% tax per bet you make....

If you were betting 5$ per transaction, your payoffs would be in 5$ multiples (unless you bet 5 lines @ 1$ which would pay in 1$ multiples), no coinage involved.

BTW, the complaint that the OP had to play the slots in US$ instead of pesos is rediculous. There is not 1 casino in Dominican resort areas that has peso slots. Also, casinos are known for their poor exchange rates. Getting 1$ for 41 pesos isn't abusive.

Wow, didn't expect these kind of responses, great entertainment. THANKS!! By the way, when I exchanged pesos for dollars they gave me peso coins to make up the difference but said they could not do that when I cashed in my ticket. AND yes its not the 90 cents so much as I'm just getting feed up with getting the short end of the stick and needed to vent.

Next time you will know only cashout in even dollar denominations. Play the odd 90?. A cheap lesson ( only cost you 90?). Woops, I forgot, you made a scene like the ugly American and they gave you the dime. If this was one of the DRs less scrupulous casinos, the moment you raised your voice is just before the moment your a** met the front sidewalk.

Although I understand the OP's frustration, and having to always watch out for being fleeced does get old here, a casino is not the place to pick this particular battle. A grocery store would be a completely different matter -- and the old "no change" routine also gets played out there from time to time.

I believer the old saying is: "The only way to get rich in Vegas is to own the casino."

Come on everyone, the OP stated he needed to vent. It wasn't the money/cents issue it was the annoyance that we all have experienced here. How many times has that happened when your in the supermarket and oh my goodness no change. Gets irritating at the least. Same thing happened the other day to me in Burger King, bought lunch for 4 people and guess what they did not have change. Some days you can just laugh it off as " life on the island " and other days it will p**s the s**t out of you.
