Thankyou to the residents of this beautiful nation.
I stayed at an all inclusive resort due to good value
offered- $1800 us for 2 weeks all costs and flight from/
to Vancouver Canada. I rented 160cc motorcycle(moto)
for duration($150)and travelled 2000kms. Pooling water,
pot holes,taxis,were dangerous.Signage and directions
were ok, people were always willing to help!

I only stayed 5 nights at Wyndham in Cabarete which
was very good. 2 nights Jarabacoa( California hostel)
which was also very good despite cool damp weather.1
night Betty's Hostel in area Colonial in Santo Domingo.
5 nights in Los Patos at Italian Oasis-has pool and nice
setting and helpful family owners.

My brief visit gave me a small glimpse of the countryside
and waterways. Random garbage was a problem by water.
The people of DR were consistantly friendly, helpful, and humble.
After much travelling the world, the DR is up there in beauty of
scenery, and its people! As a single male in 40's I was rarely
pressed for prostitutes, in fact it struck me as very family
oriented.I reccomend the Dominican Republic to all interested.
The only shocking downside was the behavior of other tourists!
From my own Country were seperate groups of people who were
consistantly rude,loud,arrogant, and cheap-how embarrassing!

After researching on this forum before visiting I had expected
desperation,thefts,scams, being pressed for sex,propositioned
for marriage ,pushed around by locals on weekends at resort,
and other Big City stresses. What a pleasant surprise(though
I was away from big cities) to encounter such happy people.

Greatfully indebted to the Dominican Republic, Steve from Vancouver.

Great trip report and pleased to hear all the positive feedback you have to share. Isn't Los Patos simply spectacular?

Steve: It's tourists like you who are willing to see things for yourself and explore outside of the all-inclusive confines who normally end up having the greatest times. I realize that this is not for most people, but I also feel the hotel industry could do a better job of getting tourists to see the real DR in a controlled way. For instance I would think many tourists would love to experience let's say a real Dominican pig roast (not one setup specifically for tourists) at some river or lake or seeing how coffee , cocoa, pineapples, etc are grown and harvested or partying at a real Dominican bar (yes that includes car washes) or going to a DR carnival party, etc...

nice report. some positive comments are nice for balance. BTW... $150 for two weeks with a moto??? sounds like a great deal. Wish I could find that in Punta Cana.

Yes ; I can observe that it takes a certain sort of temprement to enjoy the DR , go with the flow , and , not in a hurry , are expressions that fit. I can remember when I was running tours in Greece two American tourists in a wonderful dinner restaurant with fine sea view being irate that their starter did not reach their plates in 10 minutes. Do they have a psychological problem? : I think to myself.
For some it takes courage to step outside the AI but for many it is more than amply rewarded by a country with fine traditions of hospitality.

I'm at the moment staying in Sosua and also having a great time: diving, visiting carwash for Merenque, nice girls, weather not too hot, great museo for haitian art here. Later on proceeding to Samana and Santo Domingo.

Since you're in Sosua at the moment can you give me some hotel recommendations? Not interested in AIs. I'm thinking of staying a month, paying around $1000. Any suggestions?

Perla de Sosua, not hotel, apartment. You have peace, freedom with security and two min to action.
