Saw two firetrucks flying to Cabarete late this morning from Sosua. Anyone know what happened?

The ones I knew in Jarabacoa, normally had the following procedure before they could move out, and fighting the fire...

-take of the plastic cloth which protected the engine from rain, as they had no hood...
-wake up the firemen, or at least, take their dominoes away, so they would get bored...
-jump-start the truck...
-check and inflate all leaking tires...
-fill up water-truck, as it leaked everywhere
-race to fire
-unroll hose
-hook it up to leaking water-truck
-discover hose was even leaking worse than water-truck
-watch house burn down
-ask for propina, for effort...

Cabarete
There was a big red glow in the sky last night as I was driving home in Cabarete last night and if I hadn't been here I would have thought I was driving through snowflakes. This was actually ashes in the air, which covered everything this morning. It is the same every year as local people set fire to areas by the lagoon to drive out tortoises, which are considered a delicacy!

Maybe a cane field being burned? Burned to get rid of undergrowth.

I was eating really spicy burritos when I heard the sirens. But a couple of Presidentes came first!

I hear for the cane fires they sometimes tie a rag soaked with gasoline to a rat's tail. The rat then run's through the field trying to get away.

yes, this this big red glow we watched as well, smelt the smoke. The guys in the house went out direction natural area "woody" near casino, near policia cabarete, for to check while any danger exists for us, living directly beside this area. And as well the bomberos from Sosua came to check, for this we are grateful. This time it was not so near to us like the last fire in this area, so that we could sleep well later. The ashes we registered all over house and garden up to noontime.

This happens every few years, some idiot sets the grass by the lagoon on fire, and with winds it gets pretty intense.....a couple of years ago the flames got to about 20 feet high and were quite close to some houses in the Callejon de la Loma,......it usually burns itself out without many casualties,

This is the good thing - that it burns out itself usually. Last time when it happens, I was more afraid (because of flying sparks),this fire was more nearby to us and I watered the roof of the gardenhouse, the wall behind.
