I bought a Kia Sportage in December and the plates were supposed to be at Espaillat Motors on the 12th of March. Of course they were not there and so the dealer extended the temporary plate. I came back two weeks later when that plate ran out and they told me some dude had picked them up in SD and would have them there tomorrow.
Not only were they not there yesterday but Espaillat started telling me it is not their job/fault saying that Grupo Viamar has to bring the plates to them because they are the Kia distributors in the DR. So I called Viamar and got put hold and hung up on twice before being told that the person in charge of plates is not there.

What is the limit that a placa provisional can be extended for? Mine has been extended twice and runs out on the the 29th of this month. I am NOT going to get arrested for driving with no plates because some vago in SD won't get off his ass and do his job.

When I bought my last brand new vehicle I had the same issue, you get your license plates when the dealer pays the import duties.

"Grupo Viamar",$UCKS!
I bought 8 Moter Craft(FORD) inverter batteries there. One went bad after a month, they said I must have had an "accident"!
I had to tell them,I don't drive my "House"!
They gave me the same story,"The guy in charge of "Batteries" is visiting "Ford" in Dearborn!
Do you know what "Battery Acid" can do to the leather seats in a new Ford Explorer"?
THEY DO!
Sorry for "venting",but I HATE THEM!

I didn't buy from Viamar, I bought the car from Espaillat Motors. Viamar is the wholesaler for Kia in the DR.

I can t get my license plates

Note to self: Pay for car when plates are on it.

I bought cash a 125cc new Loncin scooter at San Jose motors in San Francisco de Macoris in 2008. I am still waiting for the plates. When i dropped at the office once or twice a year they are mentionning that plates are on the way..........................................Everything is slow motion in the banana Republic.

We bought and sold motorbikes 5 years ago and I am sure the plates are still not available for them.

I brought a new car from Santo Domingo Motors 6 weeks ago and they phoned me this week to come and pick up the plates, placa and matricular.

Sounds to me like the dealer is giving you the run around :)

I got a Kia too a bit over a year ago and in my case it was the dealer that didn't move their a$$ to pick up the plates at Viamar. I just happened to be there for my first maintenance and even saw the plate and everything but since the vehicle was in the dealer's name, all they could do was give me a copy of the matricula. Same thing then happened with the matricula, took about 6 months to get the matricula in my name from them.

Trainman33, I'm sorry you're upset, but 'lawyering up' here isn't the same as outside the country.
Let's be honest - on Thursday, your plates will not be there, and lawyer or no lawyer, they're not going to magically appear.

The problem is that you're being a bit too nice. Taking them at their word. Giving them a chance to put you off.
My first Dominican girlfriend taught me the act of 'don' y 'dona'. Kind of like good cop, bad cop. Good cop - the don, ask nicely, make connections, say you're stupid campisto from cibao and you thought the plates would arrive by now etc, then when you hit a wall, go and channel the bitchiest most annoying dona you can - don't give them an inch - demand your money back, demand money, make a big fuss, raise your voice, cut everyone off, take it super personal etc,

if you oscillate back and forth between these two personalities enough, one of 2 things will happen:

1. you'll get schizophrenia
2. you'll get your plates (in less time than with a lawyer).

Good luck!

A friend of mine bought a new Mercedes Jeepeta for large money. Same thing with the plates, delay, etc. He DID have his lawyer contact them directly and got his plates soon after.

"Demand money, make a big fuss, raise your voice, cut everyone off, take it super personal etc" That is what is going to happen if they can't extend the paper placa and I have to drive the loaner car. I would add throwing desk stuff on the floor and yelling in his face like Sgt. Hartmann.

You could try to do like I did for my boss' car. I scanned his temp plate, erased the dates, printed it out then too a thick Sharpie and put in new dates :D

So why did you pick Santo Domingo Motors? We are looking for a moto and hear they have a Chinese copy of a Yamaha, but are leery of buying a Chinese one. So would like to know more about them as a company....

I just got stopped by the PN because they did not like the paper placa even though it is valid. Then I went and made noise at the dealership. I'll see what happens now; on Monday my lawyer is going to SD for other stuff and will stop at whatever the Dominican equivalent of the DMV is.

Trainman another option would be do like this owner did. Get a piece of thin plywood and make your own license plate.
