Hello i have 3 questions that I need help with.

Im turning 22 yrs old next week and from Washington DC, and my brother (27 yrs old) and I are moving to -DR-. WE love girls and like partying and nightlife but we also like our privacy.
We're moving in June.

  1. I wanted to know where would be a better place to stay: Santo Domingo, Santiago, or Puerto Plata
  2. Are there quality motorcycles in DR or should we get our bikes exported from US to DR?
  3. Will there be job opportunities there?

Thank You...

If the reason you are moving to the DR is the girls and partying, I expect to see you complaining soon of the problems you have encountered. Life here is more complicated than a few chicas and cervezas so if that is your angle, please continue to use the country as a vacation destination instead of a place to live.

That said, if you have any other reasons (which escape me at the moment because your post is pretty clear)...

1. Live where you want, the big cities have bigger problems than the little cities (similar to the elsewhere);
2. You can get quality motorcycles in this country or import them, your preference;
3. There are more job opportunities here than you can shake a stick at (although why people shake sticks at things also escapes me) but generally the pay here is what you would expect for this country. If you want to work real hard and make a lot of money, work elsewhere.

Enjoy this country! The rivers, mountains, beaches, campo and the people are magical. Look around. You may learn something!

Surely all of the above depends on where you can find work, your specialist area of work is???????????
The 3 cities you mention are as different as Earth, the moon and the Sun. You need to make this decision on where you're in demand. If you don't have a specialist area of interest to offer then no, there will not be any work except for 100pesos per hour telephone sales.
There are more motorcycles than people in DR, but anything special will be worth taking with you, CobraBoy (MotoCaribe) is the guy to talk to about bike selection and benefits, PM him, or he'll be around later and notice a bike thread, there are a few bike nuts who will guide you on that.
Where ever you go you will find attractive girls, of all types, try to avoid the whores if you want to live in the country, it will do little for your credibility in social circles and no matter what some say about the ease of picking up cheap beautiful girls, in general people tolerate but generally pity the men who don't have the social skills to attract a decent woman with a job and future, with or without you. But we are all hypocrites as most of us have been there, done it, just a lot won't admit it so many years down the line now we found real women and wouldn't even raise an eye at a dirty slot machine.
2 young brothers with nice bikes could have a great time, but you need a great job that is most important, all decisions shold revolve around that, the rest will come naturally,

Where ever two boys in their 20's live they will want find girls and party, that is the lest important consideration, and OP, don't be misled by the comment about 'more jobs than shake a stick at', that is simply not true unless you have something in demand and even those are often paid terribly.
My personal opinion is unless you are going to be moving to the country and have help as in massive savings, rich family, income from abroad, then avoid the DR, there is nothing to be made unless you have a fortune to invest initially, and then like the majority, you will be spat out once it's taken your money.

This is silly.
Two guys from Washington, D.C.
Unemployed?
What skill set, beside hyper-uber-pleasure-seeking hormones?

This is a disaster waiting to happen unless there is some depth to these individuals...

Sorry, do not see this ending well.

Welcome to the DR1 where first you should SWALLOW this whole site..........read read and read. Lots of people on this forum have tons of good advice and information that you will find invaluable. Many of these folks have lived here for several years and know what they are talking about.

You guys are really young and I seriously hope that you are not just jumping into something through your rose colored glasses. I strongly suggest that you think seriously about this move, investigate the country thorougly, its people, cultures, cost of living, job availabilities, and most importantly WHAT you would be missing from home. It most certainly is NOT like living in the States or Canada where we are fortunate to enjoy many things that you will soon find you took for granted in the DR. I suggest you spend some real time in DR before making such a drastic move.

Good Luck to you.

I agree with you a 1000% two guys in their twenties leaving a city like D.C. where there are plenty of jobs and WOMEN. I f you are a single male, and your looking for available women D.C. has millions of them more then any other city I can think of and they all have their own money.

My favorite thing to do in D.C. is women watching in Tyson Corner and Pentagon City Mall. " Talk about beautiful women"

Yeah something is fishy about this post, and don't forget about all the schools with plenty of women Maryland, Georgetown, Howard etc.

Shaking a stick at something comes from the days when people would count their farm animals. They would touch each one with a stick. The more animals the more stick shaking. Hence it means a lot!

DR has mostly" DIRT BIKES" not street bikes like Ningas. I see a few street bikes in DR, but if you are like me you NEVER can ride these bikes in DR like you can in USA. The DR is very dangerous for street bikes. I would never ever ride a Ninga in the DR. Maybe a CAN AM Spyder, but then someone will steal it. BUY a dirt bike or scooter is your best bet leave your bike in D.C.

Ive have been living in DC my whole life not VA, MD, but District of Columbia. DC is not a place for foreigners either but they still seem to make it. DC is a very competitive and expensive place to live. Besides I think I have seen all that American girls have to offer: Attitude! and Headaches. Im not going for females but to live the rest of my life happy without worrying about paying $800 USD for my 1 bedroom apartment. Im looking to comfortably eat drink and live without having tons of money!

Dominican girls can give you headaches too.....migraine that is.
You want to "comfortably eat, drink and live without having tons of money".....so I assume you don't have tons of money which means you have to do something to get money to comfortably eat, drink and live.
Unfortunately eating, drinking and living here is not for free....
As Chris also asked: do you have any skills which can produce some Pesos?

Let me just say this to you Smooth living in the DR takes a lot of PATIENCE and MONEY!!! You have you whole life to make a huge move like this. At 21 the last thing on my mind was to move to a new country without a plan. You spent your whole life in DC I lived in Laurel MD for 2 yrs and loved it, also I lived in Atlanta, and let me tell all both places are totally different then Chicago. Move to different parts of the USA first. See what other parts of USA have to offer a 21 year old before you choose DR.

Second you cannot use the DR has a Solution to your problems or something your lacking or yearning for in your life. The DR is alive just like you and I, she has a pulse and a soul and if you go there with the wrong intentions or hoping she will improve your life she will eat you alive. Unlike " Lady America" Ms DR shows NO MERCEY and you will witness this time and time again in DR.

Lastly about the women I can tell you a lesson I learned awhile ago. A WOMAN is A WOMAN no matter what their birth certificate states. When you start to think one group of women are BETTER or make better partners because of their location on the globe, you are starting off life on the wrong foot.

Women were put on this earth do drive all men CRAZY. They take away all things FUN in a man's life, COMPLAIN about everything. I am a better man now that I know its in a woman's nature to give men a hard time. You have a chance your young stay away from ALL women if you want to be HAPPY and enjoy life. Save yourself its no hope for me, but if I can save one man from these MONSTERS aka women I would have done my job. ALL WOMEN ON THE PLANET please. Ride your bike, climb a tree, play flag football with your buddies, but stay away from women. You've been WARNED!!!

Where can you find a one bedroom apartment in DC for $800? A less than moderate one bedroom apartment is at least $1500, and a decent one bedroom apartment is $2000. You must live on the other side of the river. And, you must have little money which is OK for a person your age. It takes time to obtain resources. Hey, DC is tough on everyone, but there are more jops here than in most places.

You are better off working two jobs and saving your money so you can have some "bank" before moving to DR.

I have lived here since 1974 when I came to obtain my professional degree, and have been battling these ladies ever since. I first visited DR in 1981, wanted to move there then, but decided to stay here and wait until I retire. So far, 34 years for the US government, and will retire with a very good pension in one year.

You and your brothers should think about obtaining skills here before reolcating. Wishing you the best.

Smooth, you are young, if you never fail then you will never do anything great. If you fail but have tried then you have grown in many ways. If you try and succeed then you yourself are a success, and that is all anyone can ask for from life. Never fail because you didn't try, that can be the biggest regret of all, and never ever take what someone says he knows on a computer as being a reality, one thing you will notice within a few weeks of arrival, there are more actors in the Republic than in Hollywood, everyone knows something about nothing and not a lot about what they may tell you.
Make it your own, have fun, use your head, keep to who you are, never try to integrate into Dominican mentality and you have a good chance of being one of the stubborn few who refused to be be beaten by the place. All the best and good luck to the both of you.
