Just put 500 pesos in your passport when you pass it to the person at immigration.

Definitely DO NOT do that! This isn't the midnight express. You're not moving large quantities of heroin. This is like a traffic violation. The person that collects the money is different than the customs agent. The penalty is 1000 pesos, just go pay it on the right side (or get directed by customs), then go back in the normal line. No need to try to be cute, this could cause you more problems.

"Randall"
I once owed a fine of 5,000 pesos.
I put 50 US in my passport.
The woman asked"What's This?"
I told her I wished to pay her the fine, rather than paying "Leonel" who would keep it for himself!
She smiled,and stamped my passport!
Later when I was waiting for my flight, she came and satdown and talked with me about,"Life In The DR".
Last time I left the DR,a much younger woman, refused the money.
We both lost!

After spending waaaaay to much time worrying about overstaying...the time came to leave and it was sooooo simple. There is a separate desk with a large poster on the wall showing the fines. This meant that I also did not have to worry about being "overcharged." I paid the fine, actually VERY reasonable, got back in line and was on my way.

What took me more time to settle was, that just 3 weeks before I was to leave, I happened to look closely at my passport and discovered that the date they had stamped upon arrival was FIFTEEN MONTHS EARLIER than my actual arrival! That was a bigger hassle in time spent but what a lesson - who would have thought it necessary to check the passport stamp BEFORE you leave the desk? (FYI, I arrived at POP and left from SDQ)
