From today's Sosua News:

[h=5]Some time ago Franklin Hess visited Sos?a for a memorial service for his deceased father Luis Hess, a year before. The Hess family belongs to the first generation of Jewish pioneers who found a safe haven around 1940 in Sos?a. Franklin and his younger brother Cecil, were born in the 40's and early 50's in the beach town and according to Franklin, had a great childhood. Franklin was especially naughty as a child and sat often on the penalty bench outside the school. The fruit in the orchard at the neighbors was not always safe for him and his friends. He also went secretly, against the wishes of his loving caring mother, swimming with his friends in the Bay of Sos?a. When he came home his mother was already pinched nose waiting with the words that he was filthy and smelled awful. He had to immediately undergo a wash. His mother could not know that he cleaned himself with the water at the cottage on the beach.[/h]
[h=5]Anyway, Franklin grew up and now he leads the editors of Sos?a-News around in Sos?a and he talks about the rich history of the beach town.[/h]
[h=5]Many Jewish pioneers had a university degree and from the beginning there was no lack of highly qualified doctors and dentists in Sos?a. Dentist Dr. Robitschek had a dentists practice with his wife Pauline in a small wooden house at La Puntilla Street. The tools were very primitive and the drill was manually brought up to speed. In the fifties, the dentist was closed and moved to another location. The small house is still there but it is in a very desolate state. Besides the dental practice there was also small hospital where you received first aid. After the war some doctors left to Israel and the USA and Dominican doctors and dentists took their place.[/h]
