Well you found this forum so maybe the first thing you might wanna do is use "search", type in Playa Dorada and you'll find quite a bit of information on it. You might also want to try something that is called Google, ever heard of it?
I have personally used Dominican Republic - Puerto Plata Vacation Packages | Cheap Caribbean to book AI accomidations at great rates, I have stayed at both Playa Dorada and Confresi Beach in Puerto Plata.
Not so sure about budge and non AI stays in the area.

Casa Colonial is the only non-AI hotel in Playa Dorada. It is an upscale boutique spa and resort. Casa Colonial Beach Resort & Spa, Dominican Republic Luxury Hotel
i have also used cheap caribbean....there are numerous AIs at $100 / night for 2 on up. Food can be iffy, but the beaches are often very nice even at the budget AIs. A year ago I was paying 85 / nite for 2 at Costa Carib in Juan Dolio... Dunno about now.
The best deals right now on playa dorado look to be on Cheap Caribbean website, but use travel republic website and hotels.com to compare, those three are always at price wars and are much lower than elsewhere. Different areas of the country seem to be catered cheaper by the different sites.
If you don't know the north and are travelling alone it is probably a mistake to go to PD as it appears to be on its last legs.
