Stayed in Cabrara in April at a friends house. Long story short we had our first encounter with a 6 inch centipede and my husband was bit, in our bed no less. Needless to say I would like some advice as to how to limit, or better yet, eliminate encounters with those creatures especially at 3:00 in the A.M. In our bed. We will be going back later this year and will be starting to build a house. I have heard chickens make short use of the creatures but having chickens is not an option. How about spraying the building foundation with a pesticide?? Any thoughts

That is certainly an option.

Also be sure to make sure things are clean and dry...Centipedes like dark and damp (that's why it was in your bed-a nasty thought, ugh!)

Spray the bathroom and any place that is a possible hiding place, like down the overflow hole in the washbasin...be surprised what hides in there!!

Also around the foundation of the house.

I am sure you will get more advice...

Be well,

Just get a tabby for the home! It does the job 100%! The pattern of the tabby will help it a lot in catching pests...(it's a passed down knowledge that tabbies work better than plain color cats and don't ask me why I just accepted it after trying it out and it works).

My ex wife was a centipede that would sleep in the bed too and I would be able to wake up and see her. I should have made sure that the bed was clean and dry.

Excuse my ignorance pichardo- but what is a "tabby"?

Edit: Sorry i just read its a cat. I must learn to read posts several times before asking questions.

I have 2 cats, one dark grey that I brought from the states, and a white one that adopted me when a kitten 2 years ago. In the over 3 years in the same house I have NEVER seen anything larger than an ant make it inside alive. Yesterday I found a large spider in pieces out by the front door. Even the little lizards don't make it inside, and I like them..............
Get a cat..........or 2.......

apart from getting a cat there is nothing you can do. and i will add you were unlucky, totally. i've been here 6 years including 2.5 in this house in a very green area: i have only seen cienpies (literally "a hundered legs") twice. and twice they were very dead and strategically placed on display in the bedroom by our cats.

wait, no, there were plenty of them in the garden when we bought the house from the dirtiest gringos i have ever seen: the garden was full of rotting garbage bags, piles of leaves and dog crap. and of centipedes. but we cleaned the place and no sign of them now.

so my tip: keep your garden well trimmed by a gardener and cats :)

These only BITE you in the wallet.

These dangerous animals make the sounds: pss pss, quieres chica and pero ven aca and they hunt at nightime. The are very dangerous since many of them carry STDs. But they are some of the most georgeous animals in the world.

Ive been bitten twice, in the toe by a 2-3 inch and it hurt like a bitch... especially when the bigger one got me... both times, laying down on mattress on the floor. Feels like a red hot needle is being shoved in to your skin but very little swelling and the pain went away about 3 hrs later...

The bigger the 'pede the bigger the pain so I can only imagine how much pain the original posters husband was in....

In our house the centipedes get in via the floor drain in the bathroom. When I covered the drains it stopped them and I slept a lot better.

When living in Puerto Plata we had them in the house. It took 3 hits with a hammer to kill the biggest of them, lol. They are not only ugly, they are tough too.

I got bit (stung?) once in my side, halfway between my armpit and my waist. It felt like I was hit with a baseball bat.

It lasted a couple of hours as well.

Now, who here has been bitten by a cacata? My daughter used to bring them in the house and play with them. I'm not sure I'd put them on the "dangerous" list.

I have been beaten in the leg by a cacate in the jungle years ago. My leg got 3 times it size of yellow paste. To cut long story short it took me a year of pellicilin 500mg a day to get rid of the problem. I lost fews cows bitten by cacate. To tell you the truth i don t like them.
Once i had one on the back. I told my wife to kill it. She took the machete and she cut it in 2 parts on that evening. Next in the morning i was eating a pinaple that had been clean with the dirty machete. I could see the chichen trying to eat one half of that udge left over cacate. I try to be away from them but they are all over in the bush.
